On the phone go to the messages menu and go to write a message. When you've composed the message choose send. You will now have to enter the telephone number for the person you wish to reach. For international calls use the "+" symbol then the country code, area code and then the telephone number.
To get the "+" symbol varies from phone to phone. Some phones you get the plus by pressing the * key quickly twice. Some phones you get the "+" symbol by pressing the 0 key and holding it. If you're unsure how to do it read the owner's manual to your phone.

Outgoing messages are 5˘ each unless you subscribe to a text message bundle. New plans do not include any incoming message allowance, but plans prior to just recently have 50 messages included. There is no extra charge to send SMS internationally. There is a 35˘ per message charge if you send SMS from an international location. And FYI Canada is not considered international AFAIK.
I see Vodafone NZ, but no sign of Telecom NZ - any offers?
Can anyone confirm the international sms charges on prepay/EasySpeak?
Suggestion : If you are using unlocked triband on TMo prepay service, save your contacts to your phone memory rather than sim memory preceded by "+" instead of usual 00/011 international prefixes to avoid messages not being sent and to keep your caller ID up and running.

If you record your contacts without international prefix they will not be identified when you receive a call while outside of your home territory.
Similarly if you record your contacts with 00 international prefix for calling from europe, or 011 for international calling from the US your caller ID will not function properly when you are on the other side of the Atlantic. Recording your contacts with the "+" symbol followed by the country code as the international access code will ensure that your caller ID will work, where available, when you receive international calls on your cell whether at home, or abroad.
This is only relevant if you travel outside of the US to territories that do not use the 011 followed by country code as their international access number.
To get back to the point of the thread, the sender of an international sms from a territory that uses the 00 prefix to a receiver in a territory that uses the 011 prefix will only be identified if the contacts in the address book are recorded, as above.

What do you mean by "territory?" Do you mean country? If so yes, but if you are within the same country it doesn't make any difference for CID.

Re: CID
Originally posted by Colboy Yes, by territory I mean country. Hope that clears it up.
Generally you don't get any CID outside your country. You will receive CID from numbers in your home area but not in visiting area (at least when you're not in North America.)

TMo prepay service? Is there such a thing in the traditional sense where you put $X in your account without subscribing to a monthly plan? I'm moving out of the country eventually and will be terminating my monthly plan but want to use my triband when I'm back around here ... haven't been able to find any info on pre-paid plans here though ... any info would be appreciated ...
Yes, it's out there, but they certainly don't like to show it off. It's not on t-mobile.com, but you will get details from Tmo stores and some resellers, or follow the link below for their "secret" online store, where you can get phone and service for US$90 ex tax etc. It's called EasySpeak, if you already have a phone just buy the prepaid sim starter kit, usually retails for about US$50 incl. US$30 call credit. You will get a new number in this case, if you have an existing plan with Tmo they might let you keep your existing number and convert it to prepay instead of postpay (I have no idea if they will do this for you, but it's worth a try if you want to keep your number).
Per minute rates range from 20c to 34c depending on the denomination of call credit you purchase, i.e. the more credit you buy up to US$100, the cheaper your calls.
SMS and international calls also available on this service, they diminish your call credit each time you send an SMS. International call charges vary, US$1.50 plus local call charge to most countries, cheaper to Canada and Mexico.
