You only need to back-up your personal information, pic's, mp3's, etc. and settings and you really don't have to back-up all that either so long as you store them on the external memory (memory stick). The only thing you will loose is the settings and entered information like your phones phonebook, meetings, etc.

It's a good idea to put all programs, pic's etc on the external memory anyways.

Yes, flashing the firmware will delete all settings. Restoring a backup to your phone after a firmware upgrade prevents you from having to go back and manually input all the information again.

For anyone with an o2 UK supplied P900, here is some information which I hope will be helpful.

I recently obtained a P900 on o2 in the UK. This was via their excellent deal which allows you to get the phone for free.

Almost immediately, I noticed that the firmware was much older than others were reporting on these forums. In my case, the versions were:

    Phone: R3A10
    BT: R5D
    Org: R1A05
    CDA: 162004/7 R2B01

When I tried to update using the online service, then it simply wouldn't let me, as it claimed I had the latest firmware supported by my operator.

Well, I've now managed to circumvent this problem.

I took the phone along to my local service centre, and asked them to flash the latest firmware. According to the SE central server, the latest versions for the EMEA P900 were:

    Phone: R3B01
    BT: R5D
    Org: R1B01
    CDA: R2C01

I questioned this, and the chap forced an update to the EMMA system (I guess this is the service centre software), and it still said that these were the latest versions on offer).

We then flashed the phone, and lo and behold, all o2 customisations were gone, and the CDA had changed to 162003/5.

My P900 now looks like a completely vanilla unit. Totally standard, with no network customisations at all.

I reran the online update, and have now updated to:

    Phone: R3C006
    BT: R5D
    Org: R2B02
    CDA: 162003/5 R2C01

So, all you UK o2 users, get your unit flashed at a service centre, and then you will be able to perform online updates whenever you like.

My CDA reads 162003/8 R2C01 instead of 162003/5 R2C01, is there any difference?

    See Rickpaul's post about CDA:

    Carmovies:

The CDA does not determine your firmware level at all. The CDA is a customization file. Depending on where your phone was provisioned, and which Language Pack you have, the CDA may vary. One person can have the latest version of firmware with R4Q CDA while someone else has the latest version with R1C CDA.

SE probably updates the CDA with each upgrade. That way it can ask you which CDA you have, and determine whether you need an upgrade or not. It is probably not a very accurate measure from what I have been reading.

The CDA is the Carrier customizations. With generic phones, there are generic customizations. These would be the pictures, sounds, movies, themes, and settings preprogrammed onto the phone.

The only thing you should worry about is the Organizer, Bluetooth, and Phone. The organizer has determined the firmware revision on the P800.

Also, one word of advice. Sony Ericsson says you can do a backup before the firmware upgrade and restore afterwards. This has been incorrect information in the past. This may overwrite some important system files. They said the same thing about the P800. You may miss some new features of the new upgrade by restoring from an old backup. You may want to refrain from this practice when the organizer jumps a number in revision. Of course, with the new updater, you just would need to update again to get those features back

    Regards,
    Rick Paul

I am using manual update. Simply typing in the CDA number.

From my attempts to update my P900 when it was running original o2 firmware, it doesn't seem to matter if you choose manual or automatic. The updater software re-checks the phone to make sure the CDA you typed is the CDA stored on the phone.

Regardless of what you typed in, it will always believe the CDA in the phone, and act accordingly.

Although the CDA doesn't determine the firmware level that you have, it is being used to check/prevent you from running anything but the firmware that your network operator has currently certified. In the case of o2 in the UK, this prevents us from going beyond R1Axx firmware versions (organiser).

I guess this is a sensible practice if you have a phone that carries specific network customisations. Personally, I couldn't care less about the o2 stuff, as I am using the P900 on Vodafone. This is the reason I had my firmware flashed at the service centre.
