    SMS/email and roaming

Friday, I changed my phone from an Ericsson a1228d to a Nokia 3360, changed my plan to a Nation 350, and ordered the wireless internet.

Before this, I had just basic SMS messaging, where they would charge me $.10/message. I ordered the "bucket" on Friday because i started sending/receiving too many messages.

Before Friday, while I was roaming I could receive SMS messages. But now, I can't. I'm in the Chicago market and I think that I was roaming with Verizon before. When I try to send SMS with my new phone it says "No Service Support!" or some such.

Anyone know what might be going on, and how I could get it back to being able to receive SMS while roaming? Customer service isn't available until Monday, and I'd like to see if it's a phone issue first.

I think that you are roaming on Verizon's analog network that's the reason why you can't send SMS. I think that only digitial service can provide the SMS service. I was in Chicago about a year ago. I was able to send and receive SMS. I'm using the GSM system and I was roaming on Voicestream's network.

    Okay

I think you're right, because I don't see the big "D" on my phone. So, how do i make it always look for digital service? I know there's digital out here, because of my old phone...

if you just got the handset it sounds like they haven't sent you an IRDB download yet. Call cus svc and ask. The reason I say this is that you shouldn't be roaming on Verizon, you should be picking up Cingular's Chicago property
