TELUS Mobility expands digital service to new markets across Ontario and Québec
Scarborough, May 15, 2002 - National wireless provider TELUS Mobility today announced the expansion of digital wireless network coverage to smaller urban centres, rural areas and traffic corridors across Ontario and Québec, bringing new competition in digital wireless telephone services to millions across Central Canada.
Achieved through a combination of aggressive network buildouts and the implementation of enhanced wireless roaming/resale agreements, TELUS Mobility's coverage in Central Canada now betters or equals that of its digital wireless rivals.
The reciprocal roaming/resale agreements, signed with Bell Mobility and with Atlantic Canada carrier Aliant Telecom Wireless in October 2001, will increase TELUS Mobility's direct national digital coverage to 27.6 million POPs, or about 90% of the Canadian population, when fully implemented.
The Central Canada coverage enhancements announced today gain TELUS Mobility direct access to approximately 5.4 million new potential clients across Ontario and Québec. The Aliant agreement will mean access to approximately 1.7 million more potential clients in centres throughout Atlantic Canada when implemented later in 2002.
More Competition, More Penetration
"Our ambitious eastern Canada expansion allows TELUS Mobility to efficiently bring competition, choice and new digital wireless products and services to communities in Central Canada and the Atlantic region that have had fewer mobile communications options than many parts of the country," said George Cope, TELUS Mobility's president and CEO. "Increased competition is positive both for clients and for the wireless industry: Our experience shows that more competition leads naturally to increased wireless penetration."
The Ontario expansion stretches the company's digital PCS coverage southwest to Chatham, north to Sudbury and east to Cornwall. In Québec, digital coverage now reaches north to Dolbeau and east to Drummondville. TELUS Mobility is supporting its Central Canada expansion with new wireless dealers and retail partners and an extensive multimedia marketing campaign built around its nationally recognized, future friendly brand.
New markets in Ontario include Brockville, Chatham, Cornwall, Muskoka, North Bay, Nipissing, Owen Sound, Parry Sound, Pembroke, Port Elgin, Sarnia, Sault Ste. Marie, Simcoe, Stratford, Sudbury and Woodstock. New Québec markets include Drummondville, Granby, Grand-Mère, Joliette, Mont Tremblant, Saguenay Lac-St-Jean (including Chicoutimi and Jonquière), Shawinigan, Sorel, Trois-Rivières/Bécancour and Victoriaville.
Until now, TELUS Mobility clients using their phones in these markets roamed on analog cellular service. Access to the expanded digital network will provide clients with better call quality and security and new services, such as wireless e-mail and Internet access, on their phones. Later this year, clients in TELUS Mobility's expanded coverage area will be able to access national 1X service, offering clients with 1X-capable phones and PC cards fast and convenient access to the Internet, corporate Intranets and other online services.
