There have been several postings on this forum with misinformation about the origina of Kyocera. For the last time, Kyocera is NOT a Korean company. Kyocera Corporation is headquartered in Japan. Kyocera purchased Qualcomm's U.S. based handset division in February 2000 and formed Kyocera Wireless. Kyocera mobile phones, at least the ones I've owned, have all been manufactured in the USA. (That is where Qualcomm's handset factory was located.....San Diego area I believe).
Don't believe me, check this out:

Thanks . I think i read a few times on here that it was korean
Anyone know where the name Kyocera came from?
Kyocera is headquarted in Kyoto, Japan. It was founded in 1959 as Kyoto Ceramics. I assume that Kyocera is a revised name that combined the original name. Kyoto Ceramics = Kyocera???
Makes sense to me.
p.s. Kyocera Wireless is headquarted in San Diego, CA

if they want korean phones then they can use the 8 series audiovox's like the vox 8500. It's like a Daewoo, kia or hyundai stuffed into a phone:laughs:Originally posted by RNS

If the Sky5400 were a Kyocera phone, it would have the Kyocera branding on it. There is none. Also notice the extra port plug on the side of the phone. None of our sliders have that port. The battery has a charging port, on the back, so you can put the whole phone in a cradle to charge it. The battery also has the Sky logo embosed into the plastic. I havne't seen a Kyocera phone that was similar, in that reguard.
The Sky5400 is a korean made phone. It's my belief that Kyocera purchased the rights to the phone, or made some deal with SK Teletech to use the design. SK is a MUCH smaller comany than Kyocera, they were probably offered an unbelievable deal, and didn't pass it up.
At the same time, I can be completely wrong. Anyways, food for thought.
You're probably right, Japanese companies do a lot of licensing.Originally posted by xanthus
