New here, looking for info on ATT's 1900 MHz coverage in LA area

Hi -- Just picked up a Siemens SX56 with Pocket PC from work and prefer it to the Palm Vx that I used to use. But now with AT&T's decision not to expand the 1900MHz frequency network, and possibly sell 1900 MHz towers, I'm trying to decide if it's worth keeping the SX56 or wait until AT&T offers a 850 MHz Pocket PC device.

Any comments on coverage for 1900 MHz only in the Los Angeles area? Thanks.

I was in L.A. a couple of months ago. At the time I had a tri-band GSM phone so I only had domestic 1900 MHz coverage. The coverage in and around LAX was terrible.

I'll be back in L.A. later this week for the first time with my quad band Motorola V400. I'm hoping to see a dramatic difference provided by 850 MHz towers.

Thanks Jeff. Anyone else know about coverage in the LA area? I'm especially interested in downtown LA and the eastside (San Gabriel Valley).

Also, does anyone know if AT&T has anything in the works in the near future for a Pocket PC device that runs on 850 MHz? Thanks.

HP is currently working on a quad-band GSM Pocket-PC based iPaq that can be used as a phone. Code name is Onyx and my sources within HP tell me that it is scheduled to be released early to mid summer. T-Mobile will have an exclusive on it however for a period of time, but you will be able to purchase an unlocked version when it becomes available.

I go through the LA area about once a month. I find that in a lot of places, I tend to have coverage issues, BUT, it isn't isolated to ATTW as I also carry a Sprint phone with me too.

I guess, I wont really be able to find out about the 850 frequency differences because I've only had a phone that supports it for a week. Other than that, Ive had an MPx200, a Z600, a 6600 (arriving monday), and now possibly a P900. All of which dont have 850... When I did have my V600 for a week though, I had it next to the Z600 for a whole day.. barely noticed any difference in coverage.

ATT isn't going to sell off their 1900 towers, but you simply aren't going to get the same amount of coverage from 1900 as you would from 800. It will work and such, but you should be prepared for lower signal strength and the greater possibility of dropped calls and the like.
