Exclamation AT&T GSM Launch Dates for all markets

Just downloaded this from a post on the alt.cellular.attws Newsgroup. The dates up until now appear to be accurate, so I thought this would be informative to HowardForums users.

Yeah, areas like Reno are guinea pigs for the big cities like SF. At least they should have all the bugs worked out by the time they launch SF.

Thanks for the informative post, NedDorsey! I'm not too concerned with the SF launch date being in September... I probably won't migrate to GSM for quite some time. I'm waiting until decent 850/1900 GSM phones are released, and when coverage is roughly equal to the current TDMA coverage. By then I'll be subscribing to T-Cing & T PCS.

I thought that the name of the new company was going to be either Tingular or C-Mobile

Reno was/still is a 'quiet" launch - no marketing. You should call or go by an ATTWS store and confirm.

schweet. I didn't think they'd actually get all the markets done.
You'd think Philly and Central PA would be one of the first to convert - philly's kinda big, but not a major major market.

Roanoke Richmond etc are Suncom an ATT affiliate and may be launched far later than the rest of the network. I have been told by December 2002 at the very earliest for Suncom markets. It will be some time before GSM at 800mhz is introduced in many of these places and in all of southern va att/suncom runs at those frequencies (not richmond but the rest of the state) so don't hold your breath

I was recently in Des Moines, IA which is also a Suncom market and I was able to pick up a GSM signal in parts of town, but not all over. A rep there told me they would launch in October.
