My mom is going to give me her old Nokia 5190 from Fido, because she is upgrading to the 3390.
This is the old model with the old firmware. I've read all sorts of tricks and whatever else that can be done with this phone, but I am still trying to figure out what exactly you do to this phone so it can be used on other GSM networks.
I know it has to be unlocked, but to what extent? I want to be able to use other SIMs in it so I can use prepaid in other places with different providers. How do I do this?
Is there a way to do it for free with codes instead of cables?

If it is locked it will need to be flashed to become unlocked.
Fido might do it for you for free since its sold old, I am not sure what their current policy is at the moment though.
Not necessarily. If it is firmware version 5.81 or lower you can simply unlock it with a regular data cable and a program such as Nokiatool or Nokall.Originally posted by zerokarma

It has firmware version 3.41
you can use eeprom tools v3.1 and an MBUS cable to unlock it regardless of firmware version.

if your mother was using the phone on a monthly plan for a year or so and fido has the serial number (IMEI) registered in their system, you might be able to get the unlock codes from customer service.
hmm, wonder why this wasn't moved to the unlocking forum
The phone has been on a monthly plan probably about 2 years now. Is there a good chance they'd release the codes?
Oh that's cool, I didn't even know that!Originally posted by littlefuzzbear

That's actually useful info since my uncle who also has an old 5190 wants to move to Rogers from Fido but doesn't want to buy a new phone.

ur entitled after at least one year! so give fido a ring and get da code!
Well this is what happened... I called up Fido, and they told me that their policy does not allow them to give out unlock codes to individuals, only their future provider (ex Rogers) can call them up and request that the phone be unlocked so it can be used on the new network.
The phone will not be used on the Fido network anymore, it will just be sitting around until I get it unlocked one way or another, so I don't know why they would care about giving me the codes.
Can anyone out there get me the codes? A Fido rep who understands that no more revenue will be generated from this particular handset, so there's no point in keeping all hush hush?
man that's BS!
call 'em again and another rep. will probably get u the code...
their conditions are that the IMEI has been registered in their network for @ LEAST 1 year... so u're entitled to get the unlock code
my friend has a 5190 too and he juss called them up, and the code was given to him like 2 days later...
It will probably make a difference how his mother approaches this. If before she gets a 3390 upgrade she asks Fido for the unlock codes they will probably give it to her. She has had the phone on their network for over a year. If she simply gets the new 3390 they may not give her the code to the 5190 since she's no longer using that phone.Originally posted by alpha tag

That's exactly it... We don't have the 3390 yet, but it's sitting at the post office waiting to be picked up tomorrow. They tried to deliver it when we weren't home. The 5190 is going to be useless and Fido still has their customer so I don't know why they won't give out the information for the old phone. I'm going to give it another try. Any idea what I should say? I told them last time, that my mom is getting the upgrade, and will no longer be using the 5190, and that I want to be able to use it as a prepaid phone on other GSM providers. They told me to pick one, and have them call Fido to "REQUEST" the phone to be unlocked, which the guy said will probably be "APPROVED".
just tell them you're going to the US for a couple of weeks and want to use your phone with a prepaid SIM from one of the providers down there (eg. voicestream/t-mobile).
yea i guess ur right.. woopzOriginally posted by littlefuzzbear

it's juss a lil annoying how fido has this policy and tries to get around it...
my bro tried unlocking a t18z he had sitting around, but when he called up fido, they said because the IMEI wasn't registered on their network for over a year, he couldn't unlock it... he's had the fone for more than a year...
