    911 vs 112

You dial 911 for emergency, but I've noticed you can also dial 112. I'm not sure what it gets you, but I was curious. Anyone know where it connects? When I dial 112 and press send it says "sos" on my phone, same as if you dial 911

Just curious exactly what it does and where it connects.

    Thanks

I'm not sure what happens when you dial 112 in the United States with T-Mobile, but the reason that number is considered an emergency number by your phone is because that is a common emergency number in Europe and is considered the international GSM standard emergency number. Many wireless carriers will forward a call made to 112 to 911. However, it's not an official US emergency number. If you really want to know if you'll be forwarded to 911 or not, ask the carrier.

911, 112 and on some phones 08 will connect you to the same emergency service center. 112 is the standard that's on all GSM phones and is part of the GSM spec I believe. 08 is the emergency code in Mexico.

112 is the emergency number for Finland I think.

Some phones will also allow you to dial 999, which is used in the UK etc. . . .

Since Finland is part of the EU that's no surprise.

    Emergency numbers world-wide:

    My point was

My point was that the 112, 911, 08 and 999 work in the us to make an emergency calls. I thought it very interesting (and strange).

If 999 works it only works with some phones. 112 and 911 work for all phones sold in North America. 112, 911 can be dialed from any GSM phone whether keys are locked or not and even can be dialed from a GSM phone without a SIM card or a deactivated SIM card. 08 does not work from all phones either but does work for some. It works on my Nokia 6310i. 999 does not work either with locked keys or with unlocked keys. I get an error recording if I attempt 999 from my phone.

The reason all these numbers work is because the phone doesn't really call the number 911, it just tells the network that it needs an emergency call. That is why phone without sim will also allow emergency calls, or a t-mobile phone will most likely also allow an emergency call to be routed over the ATT network...

I tried calling 911 a few weeks ago and it never went through even though reception was good. I had to call 311 and have it forwarded from there.

I even thought I was supposed to call a different number or something because a phone network that wouldn't accept 911 calls would be unheard of. It better not happen again...

Report the issue to customer service. There may be a cell site that has the routing info for emergency calls set wrong. The issue may not be found otherwise until they audit all of the sites, which could be months from now.

    huh?

What the heck are you talking about, and why would I want to report it to customer service? Dialing 911 works fine. My question was why do the other numbers also work (which has been answered).

If you do drugs, please stop now.

If you would just read carefully, maybe you would consider that I was replying to the post that I quoted and not yours. Your deal is the way the network was purposely designed. So that international roamers can dial other emergency numbers without having to know the US uses 911.
