Got a question though, on seem 0032_0001, how do Cingular, AT&T Wireless and T-Mobile supplied phones have these set?

offset 34 - bit 3: Display Roam Triangle Icon (1 on, 0 off)

My V80 OEM has it on 1 but it still shows the triangle even when in the Home area. If it's set to 0, is it supposed to show the triangle when it's roaming?

offset 4B - bit 6: Alpha Tag Display (1 from SIM, 0 from tower)

On this one, the V80 OEM has it on 0 which would display Cingular Wireless in California/Nevada but 1 would display T-Mobile.

I'm just trying to see how it's done in carrier provided vxxx phones. Thanks!
    Cingular...
Roam Triangle NOT displayed (offset 34, bit 3, set to 0)
Alpha Tag Display from SIM (offset 4B, bit 6, set to 1)

Determines how often your phone will "take a look around" to see what networks are available. Setting this to slow will improve battery life. Setting it to continuous will eat up your battery.

    From the V400 reference guide....

    Network search Speed options:

    Option - Description
Slow - Slowest network search and repeat rate.
    Medium - Medium search/repeat.
    Fast - Fast search/repeat.
Continuous - Continuous search until a network is found.

Thanks xlr8. Is there a way to get the roam triangle to go on only when it's not in the home network like how the roaming light is supposed to work? I wonder what are the pluses/minuses of the SIM versus Tower Alphatag. It seems the tower will tell you who the tower belongs to.

Also, one thing I'm trying to figure out is that on my V80, I did the OTA WAP configuration for T-Mobile and it added a Websessions entry but has the locked symbol next to it. I heard there was a way to either unlock that entry or delete it without reflashing. Anyone knows how to do this?
    Cheers,

Does it only do the search when it loses the current signal or does it search like even when you're registered on a network?

That's how the roaming triangle is supposed to work - it should only be on when you're not on your home network. As far as pluses/minuses of the alpha tag display... the only reason providers program stuff like "Cingular Extend" for other networks is so an advertisement for another cell phone provider doesn't come up on your phone screen, showing that they have service when your actual provider doesn't. This way people that don't know better (99% of cell users) just think that the whole network is all Cingular. It's just a branding thing... you phone shouldn't behave differently with alpha tag from the tower. In fact, I like it because it gives you more information about the network you're on.

Definitely when you've lost a signal, and I would expect it would search only if you're not on your home network... and then it would search for either your home network or a network of a higher priority in the sim's network list. I don't see why it would need to search if it's registered on your home network. <-- all speculation, though.

    Engineering Menu

Once again XLR8, I request your help. I did the 0032 seem and added the engineering menu, then downloaded and edited both of the mma files in accordance with your notes. It seemed that replacing the useless SIM Applications was the right way to go, and did so. The I uploaded the new mma files. Power cycled the V600.

Everything is fine and well - but I still have the menu item SIM Applications, which still have none, and the Engineering menu item appears at the bottom of the Office Tools tree. Would you guess that editing the mma files was unnecessary as the SIMApps is still there, and not replaced as expected?

Now for the engineering menu - just what do I do to see the tower strength? I will play while awaiting your sage advice.

Heh, because I did get it to say T-Mobile but the roaming indicator still stays on. Yeah, I guess it's better to know whose network you're really on when you're traveling since atleast you will know where Cingular doesn't have towers.

P2K manager has an option to set file attributes... In noticed a file called websessions… maybe the file attributes could be changed to allow editing?.. (assuming of course that is were they put the data)

Some markets have what is called "best in class" service which means that the phone will go to either the home or allowed roaming network, whichever has the better signal.

In this case, it would be necessary to rescan while you are registered on your home network - or at least I suppose it would.

That's interesting on where the Engineering menu appeared. Hmmm... Did you actually hex the mma files or did you use the moto-tool?

To see the signal stregth, you have to enable Field Test Mode.

Office Tools > Engineering > Field Test Status > Availability > On

Back out to the home screen and restart your phone.

It'll come up in Field Test Mode. (It's a yellow screen with a bunch of numbers and letters.)

The screen should say "Serving Idle" when it's done rotating through a bunch of them. Your signal strength is in the top line, the last five characters. Something like "-080B" this means your signal strength is -80.... smaller (less negative) numbers are better signal strength. The threshold for hanging on to a signal is -110, I think.

There some other stuff in there, too. There's a big thread about field test mode. Search for it and it'll tell you more.

To exit field test mode, hit the menu button and then the left softkey. You can get back into it by doing the same thing.

Yeah - I don't have that - I can't roam at all in Atlanta. Doesn't matter, though, b/c Cingular has the best GSM network of anyone in Atlanta. AT&T and T-Mo don't compare.

I hexed them. I took a look at the editor in moto-tool, but didn't want to spend time figuring it out. Your original tutorial was written well, so I used the hex editor you recommended - found SIMApp around offset 363 on both files, and replaced SIMApp with FEM 00 00 00. Saved and uploaded.

I saved copies of the original mma files from the phone - I may upload them and see if the engineering menu is still there.
