depends what you want, do you want an suv that drives, feels, and performs like a car? if thats what you want youd proboly want something like a Ford Escape or a honda crv or one of those carbased SUV's. If you want a real truck based suv's you basically only have two choices nissan xterra, or jeep liberty and maybe grandcherokee.

Are you talking new or used? I'dd assume your talking new. Yeah, your looking at a Ford Escape, Honda CRV or Element, Jeep Liberty, Kia Sorento, or possibly a very low-end JGC (stay away from it), maybe an Equinox might be just over $20k, Santa Fe should be right under $20k, Mitsubishi Outlander is a little more than the Santa Fe but still right under $20k, and of course the Xterra which is priced between the Santa Fe and Outlander.

I forgot to mention the RAV4, you can get that for under $20k. Kinda sporty.

You can go pick up an Isuzu Rodeo for about that much, their sales are down and those things are inexpensive.

how about the nissan xtrail? My dad just picked one up. Its bigger than the Rav 4, and has lots of room.

I'm not sure how much USD that is, but it should be around the same price as a CRV, sorento, etc...

i checked into the isuzu rodeo. i could get that and get its nicest stuff and still be at 22k (with rebate) but i would have to see one in person. the 2005 exterras look too much like a block, i donno im just very attrackted to them. the kia sorento is a little bit bigger than the isuzu rodeo, amnd the inside of the rodeo looks kinda cheap, ill have to look at them both so far.

the Element is really ugly, but it is quite roomy and versatile inside.

my boss has one, and I have driven it several times.

but the gas mileage sucks, and folks keep staring @ you.

    What about Matrix/Vibe ?

It's not quite SUV height but still gives the drive the view of an SUV.
