    it usually has NO effect on SP locks ... but different companies do different things ..

    nokia, motorola, ericsson, and siemens do not unlock on update

    It won't affect the SP locks, but something to remember at least on the older handsets such as Nokia 5190/6190 is that if they had older firmware you could unlock those phones with just an ordinary data cable and unlocking software such as Nokall. You cannot do that with the later firmware e.g. Nokia 5190 with 5.83 and below you could use a data cable. 6.11 or 6.71 you cannot and need to have the phone flashed.
