the vx3200 seems to be the only phone that has not been tamed yet, this is all information that i scrapped up from random recesses of this forum, and the far reaches of some threads that go on for 16 pages. i have seen lots of people saying "how
do i get a data cable for the lg vx3200" well here it is, and here is how you hook it up and get it working with free ringtones and mp3s all in one nice spot.
go out and buy yourself a future dial cable #19 (radio shack id, #1700792),it will say it is for the vx6000, but it fits perfectly with no modding into a vx3200. it costs around 23$ but well worth it!
go home, and download these drivers right here... http://members.driverguide.com/list/...661/index.html get the futuredial usb composite device driver by prolific, then install those drivers. you have to sign up to use driver
guide, but its free, so suck it up and do it.
reset your computer (i didnt have to to get it to work, but if your having issues try this step)
then you plug in your cable into the usb port, windows XP should immediatly recognize it and will call it "Prolific USB to serial COM port".
ok now download either qpst, or bitpim version 0.62 ( http://bitpim.sourceforge.net/#download ). i havnt been sucessful with the .7 version, but you can try if you like. I like bitpim better than qpst personally, but whatever floats your boat.
ok now goto your desktop and right click on "My Computer" click on properties, then click on the hardware tab, then click on device manager. go down to where it says "Ports(com &lpt)" and click the plus sign next to that. You should see the "prolific usb to serial com port" and then in parentethes it should say (COM4) or (COM5) or whatever it is for your computer. Remember what this says!
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, without this step you WILL get errors!! you have to do this everytime you power cycle your phone and
want to transfer to it again. turn on your vx3200, go into menu, then settings, then data settings, then data/fax and change
it to "data in always". this only lasts till the phone is power cycled so dont worry.
ok now plug your phone into the cable, and install bitpim.
when you run bitpim for the first time it will ask you to specify a com port. You can click the browse button, and it will show you most likely exactly the one you want to use, but if it doesnt, look through them for "prolific...etc." and select the com port your saw in the device manager from earlier.
now the test of truth. in bitpim you should goto the filesystem tab and then click on the +. it should take about 20 or 30 seconds and it will load up the contents of your phone!!!
make sure your phone's data/fax setting is set to data in always, or you will get "cannot connect to vx4400" as an error.
at this point i recommend you right click on the root "/" and click backup entire tree, and save all of your phone to somewhere on your computer, just in case you screw things up real bad.
NOW, if you want to add mp3s or midi files to your phone, go down to the user directory, then into sound, then into ringer.
now right click on the folder "ringer" and click new file, and you can put in your short midi files, or your trimmed mp3s.
Once you have put in the songs that you want, goto the folder "download" then "dloadindex" and delete the file brewRingerIndex.map . now power off your phone, and turn it back on and your ring tones will be in with the standard rings that came with your phone. i dont put any mp3s on larger than 250 kb, out of fear of ruining my phone. i wouldnt put more than one megabyte total on the phone, even though that is a number i totally pulled out of my @$$.
im not gonna explain how to trim mp3s or trim midi files, because so many people at this site have done such a great job of it already. ( goto http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...hreadid=246000 and follow the basic directions for trimming and resampling a mp3, and renaming it to mid)
i recommend you all check out blazer380's http://www.s-c-u-m.com/cell/ its a great site with lots of premade mp3's and polyphonic tones for your phone.
well now scattered bits of info, are one big pile of info. if you guys have questions ask! (vx3200 only)
and i have a few questions, like, does anyone know where the image folder is in the vx3200. I tried so many things, and the closest i got was doing /brew/shared/image.bmp, and it would list the file in the hexdump of brewImageIndex.map but it would not show up on the phone. i tried /user/image, user/image/wallpaper, user/wallpaper. if only i knew!
also, does anyone know the folder for "my melodies" or "my pictures" or "my animations" in the file structure? i refuse to pay for something from vtext.com because its all such worthless crap, but i may have to in order to find out more about the file structure of this phone!
well i hope this helps out some people with there vx3200. it took me about 10 hours to get this all figured out with great help from this site, but hopefully now people with the vx3200 will be able to get it up and running in a half hour or so.
ok well i found out the file name and loction for pictures on the vx3200.
is in the sms directory, and the files are called mediapic000.dat, mediapic001.dat...etc.
i tried some hex editing tricks to get these to pictures of my choice, but all i have gotten so far is static. does anyone know the structure of the mediapic files?
Remember to be careful when loading ringers and/or voice memos to your LG VX3200. You can cause your phone to not reboot successfully....which happened to me.
After following the numerous instructions contained in this forum regarding how to connect, massage and load various types of files into the 3200 I successfully connected via Bitmap (and QPST, but Bitmap works better for me). I immediately did a backup of the entire phone and then began making changes, successfully altering the banner, adding a midi from a sample contained in this forum and began converting mp3's over to midi's, using Hex Workshop and mp3 software, and loading them.
I soon obtained a 'file locked' error message while rebooting due to one of the midi's I had loaded into the phone. Not only would the phone not recognize this midi file, since the reboot process had not successfully completed due to the error when reading my downloaded midi, I could not gain access to the midi file. The file was frozen/locked and no amount of attempting to delete, turn access on/off, rename, overwrite, restore or somehow remove/massage this file would work. The file was not that large. I still don't know what the cause of the error was but I assume it had something to do with my Hex editing.
It gets worse. It was late but I still wanted to get some kind of new sound on the phone before going to bed. I gave up on the midi and attempted converting a .wav to voice. Conversion worked fine and I loaded the file into the subdirectory under the voice directory where my other voice memos were stored. I rebooted and the phone froze. It now would not even power up correctly, preventing it from being usable.
I once again attempted to remove the offending file with no success. (Ironically I could now remove the earlier midi locked file due to the fact that the reboot error was occurring earlier in the boot process, in the Voicedb directory. The locked midi file was contained in a folder further down in the reboot process). I viewed the logfile in the Bitmap software to determine where the errors were occurring.
I also attempted to use the QPST software but received the same kind of error message. The file was locked by the reboot process and nothing was going to 'set it free'.
I finally broke down and took the phone back into Verizon. It was still under warrenty (only had the phone a week) so they gave me a new phone.
I would love to hear from anyone who has some thoughts, or experience, on how to rectify this locked file situation.
jslice, hey can you or anybody else post an original mediapic000.dat file so i can start working on the structure?
i live in puerto rico and theres nothing that i can send to this phone, i have to do it through bitpim. I have added tons of ringtones successfullly no problems. Also you stated that you had to have youre phone in data in always when connected to bitpim, well i just put mine in pc connection to usb and works excellent using the vx4400 setting in bitpim! Anyways i will appreciate if anyone made a backup of a mediapic000.dat file and posted it here so i can work on it!
I would just like to note that you can get the mobile office kit from Verizon now, and use it with your 3200 (I know for sure - I bought it and I'm using it). And yes, it does let you hook your phone up to your computer to access the internet through the phone. It also back up your address book.
Not that it lets you transfer images or sounds or anything (that I know of, haven't tried it), just fyi.
NOW, if you want to add mp3s or midi files to your phone, go down to the user directory, then into sound, then into ringer.
Hi, I can't find the usr directory. There is a file called $USER_DIRS but no directory.
See attachment.
I'm thinking I installed the wrong driver; since that "futuredial usb composite device driver by prolific" file didn't list the VX3200 in the install, I assumed the VX6000 was the closest match.
A new VX3200 will not contain the User/Sound/Ringer folders. These have to either be added manually, using Bitpim, or automatically generated by the phone when downloading a ringer from Vtext. (I'm speculating here since I haven't downloaded a ringer from vtext...but I assume the phone will set this up for you).
I wanted to use my VX3200 as a modem for EN. I downloaded the prolific drivers as noted at the top of this thread. My WinXP installation didn't have a modem entry that was capable of 230kbs. So I downloaded the VZAccess Manager software thinking I could get it to work. It didn't as it kept asking for info I didn't have. After the install and unsuccessful setup I noticed a new Modem Driver was present... something like Verizon 1xRTT HS Phone. This is the 230kbps modem driver I needed to make the setup work. I associated the modem to the USB com port created by the Prolific driver install (top of thread). I used the EN init string and username and password as noted elsewhere in the forum... works well.
Well, I followed your howto to the t, but it didn't work exactly right.
I get my mp3 file uploaded in directories I created at the root (/User/Sound/Ringer) and delete the map file. Whenever I reboot the phone, the new ringer is not there. I have tried this with a midi as well. I can see the file in BitPim when I reconnect. Could it have to do with the manually created directories? Am I missing an "s" or is there something that shouldn't be capitalized or weird rules like that?
i've been digging at the mediapic format for several months
and so far the only thing i've learned is that i don't very much
if you set one as wallpaper
then compare the wallpaperbit file to the media pic file m you will find that the mediapic is a bitmap stripped of very thing but the barest amount of data
if you have adobe photo elements you can create wallpaperbit replacement files
by exporting/saving in *bmp with RGB option =R5G6B5 and 'fliprow' which inverts the file
then you must remove the first 70 bytes with a hex edit program
then use bitpim to over write the wallpaperbit file on the phone
if we can figure out the way to turn a normal bmp into a mediapic file we can use them a wallpapers AND possibly as msg objects
The mediapic files on my wifes 3200 are 70 pixels square
the screen/wallpaper is 128 pixels square
mp3 files have have the extension changed to *mid
example.mp3 becomes example.mid
the issue about mp3's is getting the sample rate correct when exporting them also use mono it makes a smaller mp3 file and sounds just as good ( because the phone doesn't have stereo )
I use 16 bit sampling and 16,000 Hz sampling rate
this comes out to approx 1k of file per second of sound
once placed in the correct subdirectory they will be at the bottom of the list under the Verzion ringers (when you are looking for them on the phone )
PS: I have MOK for my 4500 and would like to have modem driver for the 3200
i'm on the 4500 right now( this is my internet ) and having use of the wifes 3200 would give me backup in case of phone failure
