Exclamation For those of you who received the T-Mobile SIM Update...

... when you roam into legacy areas (such as Powertel in the SE) does it display "T-Mobile" or does it display "Powertel".

I received the SIM update and am now in Atlanta and I still see Powertel. I do, however, travel back to Seattle tonight, so I'll see if it finally says T-Mobile...

    Thanks

Assuming non-EONS SIM or phone, the update should only affect the network name when the network code matches that of the SIM. In other areas, the network name is determined by your phone's firmware.

For any MNC other than the home code (again assuming non-EONS), the firmware controls the display, not the SIM. I have verified this with two different 5190s, one with FW 6.11, the other 5.81. Using the same SIM, the 6.11 phone displayed 'VoiceStream' in ex-Omnipoint areas, while the 5.81 phone showed 'OMNIPOINT'.

This also explains VStream/VoiceStream. 'VStream' (programmed in SIM) appears for the home MNC, 'VoiceStream' (firmware) for others.

It's likely that both of your SIMs have 310-31 as the home MNC and, as you stated, his card was never updated to reflect the VS takeover and yours was. If the 5190 were getting the name from firmware, it would read 'Aerial' in mixed case, not all caps.

Well i made a mistake "Aerial" shows....My card USED to say "Aerial" i got a sim card update and it says "Vstream" now. Hmm...When i put my VS sim in 5190 i get "Vstream" and "Voicestream when roaming. Sim card or phone? If the phone got it from the "Firmware" it would show the older name of the roaming carrier i was on but it didn't it simply said "VoiceStream" SOME ericsson need a firware update to remove "Vstream" "Aerial" and other things that are set in that phones firmware. I had a Ch688? and i put my card in it. It said "Vstream" but when i looked through the network settings' it showed "Aerial" This is not the case in Nokias though.

VStream: SIM card (310-31), VoiceStream: phone (non-310-31). If it were all on the SIM, VS would have made it consistent for all MNCs.

If the phone got it from the "Firmware" it would show the older name of the roaming carrier i was on but it didn't it simply said "VoiceStream"
It's possible that you're roaming into an area whose MNC has never belonged to anyone other than VS. If not, it depends on how old the FW is. See my example above, where a newer 5190 knew about the VS takeover of Omnipoint, and an older one didn't. Another example: neither of my 5190s knew that 310-38 was AT&T (it displayed as 'USA 38'). My 8290 does.

VStream: SIM, Aerial: firmware. The network settings menu on the Ericsson is ignoring the SIM even for the home MNC, the main display is using it. The Nokia uses the SIM whenever the home MNC is found.

So how did my Nokia 5190/3390 know that "AT&T WIRELESS" as it shows in network search would be given 310-38 years before it was launched or AT&T announced it would sell GSM? You might have an older sim card as most 8290's and 6190's show "USA-38" OTOH i put a sim card in my phone(old unregistered Aerial) and got "Aerial and "AT&T Wireless"(that card never got to see "Vstream" because it was cut off in the Aerial days.

It depends on how recent the firmware is. I would guess that 5190 FW 6.71 knows about AT&T. Newer 3390s certainly would.

So how would my 8290 show 'AT&T Wireless' with that same older SIM?

This example demonstrates that the code for 310-38 is not stored in the SIM. If it were, your old non-updated Aerial SIM could not possibly have known about it.

Yep, I get the same thing - I'm now back in my home market and it says T-Mobile, but when I'm roaming it says VoiceStream or Powertel depending on where I am.

Same here....MMC 310-260 is my home area (Denver) and it shows T-mobile there. When I'm out east, it still says Voicestream.

I got my update and it shows T-Mobile in any of my phones V60, 5190, 3390, P280. And I am in my home area but when I traveled to the newly coverted PCS One area it still said T-Mobile and I saw one of the new T-Mobile stores down in that area. I believe in the Berkshire Center.

Yep Tao.. that store has been there for about, hrm 5 years now? First as Omnipoint, then PCS One, and now T-Mobile... good location too.. and apparently it works... everybody and their mother around here seems to have PCS One/TMobile.
