I disagree with Howard on a number of things. After having used both Nokia, and Ericsson before, I actually find the sound quality on the Siemens S40 to be comparable. The reception I have been getting has been loud, crisp and clear. The keypad is also not an issue, after you have adjusted to the slightly harder touch. Nowadays, most people use their phones with a plastic casing, so there is abolutely no worry about numbers rubbing off from the keypads.
What's most impressive with the S40 is the combination of form factor, light weight, and an amazing array of functionalities which one simply cannot find in the market right now. Howard hasn't mentioned anything about the HSCSD feature on the S40, which for those who like to surf the web wirelessly on the laptop is a joy to have. Simply put, if you want WAP, tri-band, high-speed wireless surfing, good looks plus numerous other little add-ons, the S40 is truly VALUE FOR MONEY.
as Titanic stated:

the reason he did not talk highly about this feature is because of local provider [microcell] does not offer this feature ..
while it may be a GREAT feature .. it does not mask this phone's firmware problems ... if Siemens can fix this .. then more ppl would not talk DOWN about this phone.
Actually someone from Siemens Mobile Phones US division contacted me. Apparently the phone I reviewed contained beta firmware. I was told that I would recieve a new one with up-to-date firmware. If they send me one look for an update of the S40 review.
I forgot to mention that the S40 I am using contains the latest 2.10.0 SW, which so far (touch wood) is bug-free. That's why my user experience has been so much better than what everyone else is saying here.
would anybody know of any way i can get the firmware version of my s40 brought up to 2.9 or higher? i've got 2.4 and it's been anything else but pleasant. i've read above that 2.10 (or higher) is out but i can't seem to get a hold of it anywhere. if anyone can point me to a place here in the us where i can have the upgrade done, i'd really REALLY appreciate it. thanks!
since the s40 is not yet sold in north america officially, u will [most likely] have to send your phone to siemens to get it updated.
unless u know someone who lives in a country where local cellular providers are OFFICIALLY selling and supporting the s40. then u could mail it to them and have them get it updated [since siemens will PROBABLY take their SWEET and LONG time with flashing the phone] .. a 2 week turnaround is better than a 2 month one .. rite! ..
