How do you buy an unactivated phone from ATT?

I tried to buy a SMT5600 from an ATT store tonight, turns out they dont sell unactivated phones, jeez. Any tips?

Also I thought it was $199 unactivated, but they quoted me $319 unactivated, any thoughts?

Your answer would be buying from amazon. Just add phone and skip service plan. $319 regular price.

You might do better from eBay.

No phones are ever being sold from an ATT store without new activation or a previous account... that is a company policy

Easiest way is to set up a GoPhone account, which does cost you the minmum $20 first month of service though.

Yep, the way it's looking AT&T won't even give out unlock codes to their current customers so they can take their phones to Cingular. Well, really, that's Cingular's fault...
