How to tell when an OTA arrives

Since we've been hearing about OTA updates a lot lately, how do I tell when I get one? I've heard people mention the OTA OK text message, but someone once said you only get that if your phone was off during the first attempt, and you later turn it on and get the update. Then I've read about people saying they got an OTA and when it happened, but I've never seen any evidence of one on my 3595. How can I tell when one comes in? Is there any way to tell what it did? When I first got my GSM phone and SIM and the phone registered on the network for the first time, I got a message that said something like "SIM card updated", but it disappeared after a couple of seconds. Was that an OTA, and, if so, how will I know one came in if I'm not watching my phone at that time?

I've only experienced an OTA twice, both times on AT&T. My Nokia would display, "Allow SIM update?" So, I think that's it.

I've seen the "OTA OK" message as well. But what really got my attention is when I saw "OTA Failed".

Are you able to recieve a OTA while roaming, or do you have to be on cingular's network.

I think they can try, but chances are the OTA update will fail if they try to send it to you while roaming. You'd probably have to be on native Cingular to get the OTA update successfully, even though people are on native Cingular all the time and still don't have the OTA update while others in their market do.

I've had a couple, but don't recall any notification on the screen. I do remember for whatever reason looking at my old T28 screen back in the Pac Bell Wireless days and seeing my screen flicker a little, then read Cingular from Pac Bell. In my experience, all the OTA's have been automatic.

When my phone reboots for no apparent reason, I can count on seeing OTA update reports here within a day or two.

This is incorrect, I've seen updates pushed while out of the country. It's just data coming in similar to an SMS

AL- unless you are sitting and watching the mobile 24/7 for the SIM updating operation to display you will never know when it occurs.

I receive the OTA already on one of my 32K sims - I got no notice. When I do a network search I see Cingular
    Cingular

    I use to see:
    Cingular
    Cingular Extend

I did not receive an OTA OK message or even a message to turn my phone off & on.

I do know my mom's phone a Motorola V400 said sim unregistered in the morning. Her sim is an 8K one.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I did see what I thought was a "SIM card updated" message the day Ivan blew through the area in September, but I was on the way to Sonic and thinking more about lunch than my phone.

Thing is, around here, Cingular is so strong that I don't know when I'd get the chance to roam on ATTWS. There might be some areas out on the edge of their footprint where I might happen to switch over, but I have no idea where they might be.
