Nice Review, WirelessAndy! Any chance on doing a review on a MPx220?

Awesome review! Even with your nitpicks, I think I may have been sold on this phone. I'm currently using a Nokia 6230 but I've got this problem with it than when I answer a call, there's a loud screech that bothers both me and the caller and it apparently is a problem with the location of the mic and the speaker. The V551 sounds like just the cure.

Just got my v551 from Cingular and the earpiece volume is definitely too low. I have it set to the max (7) and it's just about OK as long as I'm in a quiet place and the person on the other end is speaking loudly. I've read here that I can adjust the gain by hex editing "gain_table.bin", but I'd rather exchange my phone unless this is a problem with all v551-s. Does anybody else have low earpiece volume?

I thought the V551 earpiece volume beat the V600. It seems much louder to me. I have a slight hearing problem and I have no problem with this phone. Maybe yours is defective.

Great review though. My nit pick is that there doesn't seem to be many ringtones available for it in Cingular's site. That's not the phone's fault though. Otherwise, this is my favorite Motorola phone yet.

Agreed: Overall, a good effort on Motorola's part!

Sidenote... I just learned that my mother in-law dropped her Motorola V60gi- a phone I painstakingly located for her as new-old-stock last year since they're getting impossible to find new- in the TOILET just as she was flushing.

    Voom! Gone.

She took herself down to her local Cingular store and bought a Motorola V551. She had no clue what she bought, other than "It's a Bluetooth!" she declared.

I guess I'll be teaching basic Motorola V551 to her this weekend, and reconfiguring her OEM Motorola speakerphone car kit for the V551.
Air goes in and out. Blood goes round and round. Any deviation is a problem.

I just picked up this phone two weeks ago and I must agree with others that this is my favorate Moto clamshell since the v60 series. It takes the v400/600 and fixes some of the bugs they had. I got mine for $80 after rebates with a new contract and I think that is a steal for this phone. If you want a nice feature packed phone for a great price this is the phone to get. Also I agree with others that the blue rubber is really cool and has a nice feel to it. I hope it holds up!

Once nitpick from the V600 that was fixed on the V551 is you can now turn the speakerphone on before the call connects.

The reason I didn't comment on audio loudness is because I had no issues with it. Plenty loud for ME, but it doesn't beat my current Cingular "It's so Loud Award" in my book: The SE T637. Now, that phone has some L O U D earpiece audio!
lol, just got off the phone with my wife before i read that post and i'm still rubbing at my ears 'cause of the loudness (t637)

nice review, so what will you be nitpicking next! (z500a maybe?)

I just thought I should mention that Cingular has a 300 KB limit on MMS, not 100 KB.

What the heck! After reading this cool nitpick, I started to look at my V551 when suddenly I noticed something about the main screen ... Aw, man; looks like it's a liiitle bit leaned to its left . Barely noticeable but noticeable nonetheless

I’ve been told that there is a small bug when using Bluetooth headsets and ringer profiles, where the phone will ring in a default “Continental” ringer when paired with a headset.
Except for the MPx220, every Motorola Bluetooth phone I've played with, defaults to that ringtone when paired with a headset. Be happy it rings at all, early versions of the V500/V525/V600 didn't ring at all through the phone.

By the way, EXCELLENT review, but I just dont like the Blue rubber, it makes a very nice phone look cheap to me, IMHO. If I get one I will get an OEM V500 faceplate and battery door from CNN.CN or Ebay and replace it.
