sorry sUnShInEdc for belaboring the obvious. I guess the salient question is, what could be different about the palm device that makes it unable to connect? Many people are tethering with no problem from laptops...
I’ve read the thread here, but I am a little confused as to the scope of the “proxy workaround” being discussed.
I have a Nokia 3650 cell phone which runs on the Symbian operating system. A few years ago, I downloaded and installed the Opera web browser onto my cell phone. Up until a few months ago, I was able to use the cell phone Opera browser to surf the web via my T-Mobile “t-zones” account. I did not need to use a computer/laptop/PDA to accomplish this. For the past few months, when I try to use the cell phone Opera browser, I always get a message to the effect that it was unable to connect to the server, (I assume this is the port 80 issue that was mentioned in this thread).
I have seen a few posts on this thread that say the solution for the problem is to simply use the proxy settings in Opera to enable browsing over a “t-zones” account. However these post do not explicitly say if they are browsing using a browser on their cell phones, or if they are browsing using a browser on their laptops/PDAs, and simply using the cell phone as a means to connect their laptop/PDA to the web.
My question is this: Using only a Nokia 3650 cell phone, (with the cell phone version of the Opera browser loaded on it), and a “t-zones” account, can the “proxy fix” be used to allow me to browse the web on my cell phone?
P.S. Using the instructions found on this thread, I was able to “link” my iPAQ PDA to my Nokia 3650, (through a Bluetooth connection), and then using the “proxy fix”, surf the web on the Internet Explorer browser that is on my iPAQ. This functionality is great for times when I have my iPAQ, (or even better, my laptop), with me, however for my normal day to day activities I am only armed with my trusty Nokia 3650, hence my question.
Any light anyone can shed on my question would be greatly appreciated.
your answer to your question is yes. I also have a symbian OS on my phone (P900) just type in the given ip adress in the proxy settings in opera and it will work. Thats it.
How do you get to the proxy settings on the cell phone version of Opera?
When I launch Opera and select Settings I have 3 Tabs to choose from: Display, General, and Cache. Nowhere under any of these tabs do I see an option for proxy settings.
Will this work with T-Mobile To Go? Or do you need to be on a PostPaid plan paying at least $4.99? I have tried this with To Go but all I get is "your plan does not support this feature".
Just set turn the proxy to 'on' and use the following http ip and port:
216.155.165.50 port 8080.
[/B]
Could anyone explain how to use these settings on a Windows XP computer connected to a T-Mobile phone?
I assume by http ip you mean IP address, correct? So, I went to Properties for that connection, then chose Networking. highlighted Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), clicked Properties, then instead of the default "Obtain an IP address automatically", chose "use the following IP address", and put in 216.155.165.50. Was that the correct way to set IP for this connection?
How about DNS setting?
To set proxy to 8080, I see only one way to set proxy server. Not in those connection properties in "Network Connections", but in "Internet Options", "Connections" tab. I highlighted that GPRS T-mobile connection, chose "Settings", then "use a proxy server for this connection". It then asks for "address" and "port". The directions above list port 8080 for the proxy, but no address. What should be the address? I ended up putting 8080 in both fields, but I don't think that's correct.
I used the dial-up number *99***1# which I had read about quite awhile ago, username wap, no password.
I got the error message:
error -734
the PPP Link control protocol was terminated.
What did I set up wrong?
Could anyone be more specific regarding setting this up on a Win XP computer? Thank you.

I was able to tether my Samsung E315 with just $5 T-zones to my PC not long ago. It stopped working when I tried just yesterday. I've changed to a BlackBerry plan, but still using a E315 for the tethering. Not sure if this is the problem, or did they somehow block this setup? CSD to an ISP works... Anyone?

Interesting. Maybe it's because I'm using an E315 with the blackberry plan, but I changed back over to just T-zones and it works again. GPRS was working on my E315 tho, just couldn't tether. Maybe a username/pass was required? Maybe I had to use the blackberry.net APN.. I don't know, but oh well. My blackberry is a POS anyway. Got it cheap. Like it and looking for a color one now tho...
T-Mobile announced that eff. 2/9/05 that all Blackberry Internet and third party software features and applications should be restored so no body should be complaning any more about those issues and the port 80 thing...it should be fixed. for further difficulty it may be something else and a trouble ticket would then be needed.
