After doing the Quick Mix, click on the down arrow in the name box(top left next to the "X") then select Split Tracks. This will give you left and right. Click the "X" box top left and it's deleted.

Yes, I too have been having problems with my files being too large. I have done everything as you said. The only thing I can come up with that may be the problem is deleting the right channel. What process did you use to delete the right channel?

Could someone please help me?
I converted my mp3's to wav files, and cut down songs to 30 sec. I didn't make any other changes to the song format. However, I am only able to download 3 of these ringtones to my 8000. The phone says that my memory is full. What am I doing wrong? Is it incorrect to convert the song to wav file? I see some people post that they have wav files, others midi. What is the bit rate and where do I change it? Is that my problem?
I am a computer idiot, so I would really appreciate some how-to advice in simple english. Thanks so much.

Jerseygirl :
They need to converted mp3s', Wav format is almost as BIG as raw audio. There is little if no compression of the file.(only saving the important info). Mp3 is what these phone read best and the file sizes are alot smaller.(GIN downloaded ringers are in MP3 format). You can also use actual Midi songs that you can get for free, just do a search for "Midi song" most web sites you visit that have an electronic keyboard music playing are midi file songs. These are the small file due to the fact that they are only a code (program) that tells the sound chip what tones to play. You computer also uses these same files for sound it makes.
Go to the begining of this post and read my HowTO with audacity. This is a free program that does the job fast and simple. A 30 sec. ringer should be around 76-170kb. in size and you can get almost 20 of these on your phone !.

PM me and I will send you a sample !
Where exactly do I change the decibel rate in audacity?
You adjust the decible(volume) by using the tracks - \/ + slider

When I started making ringtones for my
phone I had no problems and they were
fine, however I went back into audacity
after about two months of not making any
and when I try to set the project rate to
16000Hz i is grayed out. Any thoughts?
Can you choose 22050hz ? That will work fine also with just a little file increase. If this is not posible, try removing and reinstalling the program. I'm a MAC OSX Guy and don't have these probs.![]()

I'm having a lot of trouble with file size too and I'm following the instructions exactly. I'm loading the MP3, setting the project rate to 16000, selecting Quick Mix, selecting Split Stereo Track, deleting the right channel, changing the left channel to Mono, trimming the MP3 to 30 - 45 seconds.
When I do this, under Mix it says "Mono, 16000Hz, 32-bit float". I've been amplifying the trimmed MP3 most of the time, but I've tried several times without amplifying too. I Export Selection as MP3, give it a name, and save it.
My file sizes are ranging between 322 KB and 430 KB, with one as large as 515 KB. I have no idea what I might be doing wrong.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it.![]()
Toni,
It's the bit rate that's the biggest factor in file size.
Go into file->prefs and set the mp3 export bit rate to 64K. That's a decent compromise between sound quality and saving space. A 30 second mp3 should be under 300K.
Toni, I figured it out. It took a while, but I found the right way to do it:
Import an mp3 into Audacity.
Choose the 30 seconds you want out of the mp3 and delete the rest.
In the bottom left, choose 16000hz for the project rate.
*EDIT* you can leave it at 44,100. I just tried it and it made no difference in file size.
Click file > Preferences > File formats and change bitrate to 32.
Do the Quick mix.
Then you'll notice that your song grew a few seconds after the 30 second mark. Delete that extra stuff.
Click the drop down arrow next to "mix" and shoose separate stereo tracks.
Turn left track to mono.
Delete right track.
Export to mp3.
Then either you're done, or you can change mp3 file extension to .mid
If you're final product crackles, then you need to slide the gain to the left and then "save as mp3" again. I had to slide my ""'Coldplay-Clocks" to -15db before it would stop crackling.

Thank you guys, it's working great now![]()
How do you go about deleting the right channel and making the left one mono?
There's a drop-down box on the left where the name of the MP3 is - click that and come down to Split Stereo Track. It will open a left and a right channel, and you can click the X in the corner to close (delete) the right channel.
Edit: Forgot to mention how to make the left mono. After you delete the right channel, click the same drop-down and select Mono.
I'm not sure if anyone else has this problem, because I can't find an answer to it.
I was editing and shaving down an mp3 last night to use as a ringtone(Touch Me, by The Doors). If you're not familiar with the song, the left track is heavy on drums and bass, while the right track is all guitar, and the vocals are mixed.
I change the file format, do a quick mix, split the tracks, delete the right, make the left mono, but for some reason, I'm still only hearing the left track. The quick mix doesn't seem to be mixing the tracks correctly.
Anyone know what's going on?
