Hi All,
I just wanted to post my initial thoughts of the Nokia 6590 after a week's usage. So far, this phone has been perfect in almost every aspect. I wanted an upgrade to my 8290 (that's still one of my favorite phones) but the 8390 felt too cheap to me. I also wanted to upgrade the features, without downgrading the size of the phone. Overall, the phone is definitely a keeper and will be my every day phone. Here are some pro's I'd like to stress:
Reception: The signal on this phone has been nothing but AWESOME! Every weak spot I go to, even in fringe areas, I still get one bar. I am able to hold calls while talking and have not dropped a call yet! Also, when I walk down into a basement of an area that does not have reception, and I go back to an area that does, it only takes a couple seconds for the 6590 to regain signal! Additionally, I can hold a WAP CSD connection throughout the high rise buildings I go to, on every floor that I visit, and even in the elevator shafts!!! I would say the reception on the 6590 is almost equal to that of the 6310i.
Size and Feel: If you love the size of the 82xx/88xx/83xx you'll love the 6590. It's the exact same size as the 8390, but definitely feels more solid. In fact, my initial
impression was the casing felt like the 8890 (just made out of plastic). The 8390, you can definitely feel that it feels like plastic because of its light weight; the 6590's faceplates are heavier.
WAP Browser: I don't have GPRS enabled on my account so I just use CSD. If you're used to Nokia's interface, it's definitely something you'll like. I have no problems surfing WAP sites and it seems a lot faster then the other phones I've used.
Call Log: Now holds 20 numbers, great improvement!
Backlight: I really like the backlight and how it fades in and out
FM Radio: By FAR one of the greatest features of the phone, separating it apart from the 8390. I commute to work by bus sometimes to work, and the FM radio allows me to bring one less gadget while I'm on the road. The volume is a little loud when I'm listening to the radio in a silent office on its lowest setting, however, when walking in downtown I have no problems!
Areas I have minor gripes about:
Alarm Clock: I have ALWAYS used my Nokia phones as an alarm clock while traveling. Ericssons are way too quiet, but unfortunately, the 6590's alarm plain sucks. It does start off quiet and gets louder and louder, but it doesn't get as loud as an 8290/8390, etc...
Text Messaging: I *REALLY* like how the 8290 handles text messages. Unfortunately on the 6590 when you press and hold the CLEAR button it deletes one character at a time rather then erasing the whole screen. I know you can go to options --> clear text, but that is just annoying. I guess those days are over anyway since all the newer phones utilize this method.
Button Location: I don't like it how the softkeys are so close to the talk and end buttons. Sometimes I inadvertently hit the end key when I want to hit the soft key (and vice versa) when I'm calling someone!
Calling Cards: I cannot find a way to store pre-paid calling cards on the 6590!!! I really hope Nokia did not leave out this feature because I used it all the time on my 8290! Where is it?
Current Call Timer: Why in the world did Nokia leave this feature off?! I HATE not being able to know how long I've been talking to someone, but they also left this feature off the 8390's...
OVERALL: I have had no major problems to make me go back to my other phones - which is why I'm selling most of them now. All of the other features (ie: Infrared, calendar, etc..) all work great - I just wanted to stress the major pro's and con's I had about the phone.
Regards.

appreciate the review. how much you get it for and from where? also did you use the Nokia PC suite with the phone? im just wondering if the calendar program is nice.
also someone in the "8390 gripes" thread mentioned that with the new software for the 8390, you can press and hold down the end button to clear a whole screen from text at once. does that work with ur 6590?
oh yea, i had two other questions bout the phone. is the alarm a daily alarm or does it have to be set everyday? and when entering something into the calendar, can u use T9 text?
are u sure they left the call timer out??? i thought they left it out on the 8890 but when u really look at the calling menu theres a place where you can enable it
Can you use 8390 faceplates on the 6590? I know in Howard's review he says you should even try, but if they're the exact same size, why not?
Been here for almost a year and never knew there was a review section?
When you use a calling card; you can use those sprint ones and stuff.. its like 500 minutes for $10 or something?
Home ISP, RR-Ultimate WiFi, $90/mo | Verizon 4G, $30/mo Unlimited
School, $5,000/semester | Work
You can basically do the same thing by utilizing the "Pause" and "Wait" command by pressing the * key.Originally posted by mitzeclipse

Type in the calling card number, then put in the "Wait" command by pressing the * key 4 times (a letter "w" would be shown), then followed by the password.
For example: 1 800 234 5678 w 555555
i guess he is asking where is place to "store" calling cards and how to go into menu to "display" call timer.Originally posted by Wai

Yeah, exactly - the "store and wait" method isn't really the new feature, kinda a bandaid.Originally posted by nokia7160dude

The alarm must be set once a day; did not find an option yet for reoccuring alarms.
Yes, almost positive. By default the call timer is hidden on the 8290, so you have to go into call log and activate it. However, there is not one of those settings on the 6590, rather a "call summary".are u sure they left the call timer out??? i thought they left it out on the 8890 but when u really look at the calling menu theres a place where you can enable it
What I meant was that if the Wait and Pause command can basically do the same thing as the old Calling Card feature, then there's really no need to keep this feature.Originally posted by nokia7160dude

Anyone know if they indeed took out the call timer DURING calls?

The 6590 does not have a call timer that visibly counts time on-screen during a call. It does have the "call summary" feature just like the 8390 - go into "Settings" then "Call Settings" and scroll to "Summary after call." It will only tell you how long you've been talking AFTER you end a call - not as good as the old timer IMO, but useable nonetheless.
You lucky dog you finally got a 6590, I am soooooooo jealous lol. I am working on getting one, I like my 8390 just fine but I would like the FM radio on my phone. Enjoy your phoneOriginally posted by MitzEclipse
