I'm going out on a branch here... you took your GF's phone, and deleted crap on it since she had it locked, and you wanted to know what was on there. Now that you really pooched the hell out of it, you want us to help you fix it...

My suggestion, take it back to your carrier's store (Verizon/Sprint/Nextel), tell tell them you have NO idea what happened to it... feel free to use this script...

"Hi, my name's xxxxxxx. I got this phone (how ever long you've had it), and it's been working fine, but last night, when I turned it on, nothing happened. I tried to take the battery out, and it still wouldn't turn on. Can you see what's wrong with it?"

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT tell them you have a data cable, and DO NOT tell them you did anything to it... if you do, you've just screwed yourself, so enjoy it, cause your GF won't be doing it anymore, since you screwed up her phone because you were nosey...

If your lucky enough to have Verizon, they'll just give you a new phone...

And this time, don't screw with it... if you really want to see what's on it, and she has it locked, either ask her for the code, or type in #5625*<END> and that will unlock the phone for you...
Dude... know that chick you used to mess around with...
I heard she gave AIDS to a ton of people... but I've got good news!
I just saved a bunch of money by switching my car insurance to Geico!

    HELP, MY 8910 isn't working

I have a Audiovox 8910 with Verizon, I bought a data cable on ebay and downloaded bitpim. so I get the drivers to work and the cables and everything, and takes a few times, but I was able to upload an mp3 onto my phone and it was working. Well yesterday I turned off my phone and now when I turn on my phone it gets stuck on the Verizon wireless banner at startup and won't load. I tried to plug in the data cable but my computer says it cant find a driver even though I installed the Curitel driver. so I unistalled bitpim and the driver and reinstalled the driver and still isnt working. I am afraid that i ruined my phone please tell me i didnt. It was workng till I turned off my phone and now its not working.

Just a heads up that the authors of BitPim expressly warn against using it with the Audiovox 8910. According to them the file system of the phone is too "fragile" and the phone is prone to becoming trashed and needing replacement.

I've used BitPim to read from the 8910 quite a bit, but have been afraid to try to write anything to it so far due to that warning.

P.S. In an earlier post I said I'd post and report of the "straight through" USB cable worked as well with the 8910 as the one with the little box in the middle. I have now tested the straight through cable and (just like with the other cable) I was able to read and backup the entire filesystem using BitPim. Can't ask for much more than that.

    C. George, just to let you know, I've been playing with my filesystem almost every day since I got my data cable... (about 3 weeks now)... I've gone through about 500 diff MP3 ringtones, lol

It hasn't effected me at all... I don't think you have to worry much... and anyway, if it messes up, all ya got to do is take it back to verizon, and play dumb... they'll hand you a brand new one...

    Need lots of help

I have an 8910 through Cellular One in South Dakota. I bought a USB data cable with CDs on ebay a couple weeks ago and cannot get it to work. When I plug the cable in, my computer tells me that the usb device is not recognized, and when i manually try to install the drivers, none of them will work. I have tried the drivers from the CD and the Curitel ones. If someone can tell me how to get the drivers to work or anything else that I should try, it would be greatly appreciated. All I really want to do is get my pictures off my phone and maybe put a midi ringer or two on it.

Joe, if I may, sell your data cable and software on ebay and just message your pictures to yourself and find some website that has free ringtones, or pay the 6 bucks a month and get a bunch of ringtones. If you really want to use the data cable i would suggest unistalling the drivers and software you bought, unplug the data cable and phone, and restart your computer, then reinstall your drivers, then go online find the driver website and update them, then plug in your data cable. Make sure you do it afterwards. I was having problems with my phone and data cable, and finally made it work, i was able to download a song on to my phone, it worked and one night i turned off my phone and it didnt turn on again. Im lucky cause i have verizon so i just went to the store and told them i dont know what happened and they gave me a new one, but i wont be using the data cable unless i know the software works with my phone. Just be really careful, I know that the software warns you, I ignored it and figured id be one of the phones that worked, but it didnt. So just be careful, I dont know what cingulars return policy is now that they are mixed with att I know there customer service is bad.

Exclamation tips: that may or may not have been posted

Some information for those comparing 8910 to 8900 settings.

    typical generic 8900 settings are:

    ringers: /user/sound/ringer/ (mytone.mid or mytone.mp3)
    wallpaper: /brew/shared/images/ (my_image.jpg)
    camera (pix): /camera/photo/ (photo_00xx.jpg)

    typical generic 8910 settings are:

    ringers: /user/sound/ringer/ (mytone.mid or mytone.mp3)
    wallpaper: /brew/shared/ (my_image.jpg)
    camera (pix): /brew/shared/jpeg (photo_00xx.jpg)

    ---
This means that those using Brewsky 8900 will only be able to see their ringtones, and not wallpaper or camera pics on an 8910.. (you will need BitPim for this) Hence the reason is is best to initialize a wallpaper seed file.

If you accidently delete all your cam pics with BitPim and can no longer take cam pics, you can reinitialize it by uploading a small (photo_0001.jpg) file to the appropriate directory, take a cam pic on the phone, then delete all pics thru the handset. THEN do not ever use BitPim to delete cam pics again!!!
    ---
Typically it is best to find a seed file (free download) download for ringers and wallpapers to initialize their functions and then you can use BitPim to copy back and forth.

Always, either turn-off the handset and turn back on, or go to your respective (Brew, Clicks, or Get-it) function menu to force the handset to recognize new files. It's just a good practice, and allows the phone to function properly.

Keep copies of All original material on the phone... This may save you a trip to the phone store and $$$ to replace the handset or lost apps.

If you buy a USB data cable, make sure you have a proper driver for it! Don't wait til you're stuck and waste bandwidth here griping to everyone else about it!

    Don't take any wooden nickels!
    ---

NOW... Does anyone want to tell me which directory animation files are supposed to be in, if they worked?

And it would be nice if you could send images, and not just cam pics... Why have a send function if it doesn't apply?

When i change the volume (from lvl 1 to lvl 5) it sounds exactly the same... . Is this how these dloaded ringtones work???? Or is it the way i converted it?

    wap and mms settings

Okay, sorry if I've missed this somewhere else. I've read every post I can find (lots) and tried all and still can't seem to get this to work.

I have free WAP working on my LGvx6000 and right now I have the same exact settings put in my wife's Audiovox 8910. When I launch the browser, though, I get a message that says, "For wireless internet services, please dial *611".

Is there a setting I've missed, or has Verizon actually totally disabled free WAP via the 8910?

    Second question...

My main purpose in enabling free WAP is to redirect her PIX messaging to my MMS Diary app and avoid the $0.25 per message that Verizon charges. It's working great from my LGvx6000 by changing the MMSC Server and Upload Address. Where do I find these settings on the 8910?

BTW, I'm using a serial cable from Gomadic.com that I bought for my LGvx6000 to connect bitpim to the 8910 and it's working great. Just gotta change the port to RS232C (##7678END). Requires absolutely no drivers to be installed. Can only use the browse file system function, but that's sufficient to get the camera pix off the phone, which is what we wanted.
