I think they'd require you to return the new phone that you purchased with the new plan if you cancel it...?

Please correct me if I am wrong? I want to know if this would work.
If I am a current Verizon customer, whose contract ends at the end of Oct. But I wanted a new phone with the new contract phone price bonus, while still keeping my current, not currently offered rate plan (and number if possible)...
could I?
1. Start a new contract with the new phone that I want? Keep both accounts active until before the trial period on the new account expires.
2. Switch my new phones ESN to my existing account. And my old phones ESN to my new account.
3. Cancel the new account before the deadline
Resulting in getting the sign up bonus for my new phone but still keeping my existing rate plan and coverage and phone number.
I may buy a Korean import phone which is only 800 Mhz CDMA. So it only works on non-national plans. I currently have the single rate east plan and would like to keep that as it extends my calling area more than a local plan would. If I took on a new plan now, I would only be able to have just a local/metro region plan with a Korean import phone.
Is there a better way to get the new contract bonus towards a phone, while keeping your current rate plan, and number? A loyalty rebate or bonus may not work since the phone is an import and not carried at the Verizon store.
Thanks for youar advice. I'm sure other people have had similar situations and concerns to mine.

If you cancel a new contract during the trial period, you have to return the phone that you got when you signed up. Can't just take them any old phone. Have you verified you can't get a new phone at the subsidized price and retain your current plan? Here in the South market, we do equipment upgrades all the time without changing the plan if the customer doesn't want to lose it.
OK. I understand. Thanks.
The reason I'm avoiding an equipment upgrade is that I heard that signing a new contract will get you significantly more money towards a new phone. The phones I want are in the $500-$600 range and a token $50 or $75 isn't enough. I'm trying to do this through an independent store since the Verizon store doesn't carry these phones.
How do other people do it? When they want to keep their plan but get new an expensive new phone?
