sim chip in a unlocked gSM phone

HAS ANYONE PLACE A NEXTEL SIM CHIP IN A UNLOCKED MOTO GSM PHONE AND TRIED TO USE IT IN THE U.S. DOES THIS WORK

I have tried that in Kalamazoo Michigan where GSM service is provided by AirLink PCS, and T-Mobile. Neither network allowed the phone to connect. This kinda figures since Nextel said on their press release that the GSM roaming service will not work in the United States. Of course, I wanted to try anyway, but it turns out that they were right.
