Lightbulb Post your Bluetooth tethering speeds -- Let's compare

Please post your download speeds while tethering via Bluetooth on the Cingular network. Let's all use the DSLReports' Mobile speed test page for uniformity. Let's run the test at least three times, using at least the 100k file and average the results for accuracy. For non-EDGE handsets, please provide the class of your GPRS if you can (Phonescoop can help). Bluetooth tethering Cingular customers only please.

    Provider: Cingular
    Location: Miami, Florida
    Date & Time: 2/8/2005 4:00 PM
    Phone model: Nokia 6230
    GPRS Type+Class: EDGE

    Test site: http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed
    File size: 200 kb
    Test count: 5
    All download speeds (kbit/sec): 46, 70, 59, 70, 60
    Average download speed (kbit/sec): 61

    Thank you all in advance!

    Slightly off topic,

How do you go about tethering with Bluetooth? I posted this in a new thread earlier today. I want to get a v551 and use the bluetooth to get on the internet on the EDGE network. How is this done and what plan is needed? I'm sorry if this is covered in a FAQ somewhere.

Can some people with a V551 and EDGE do this test and report back please. THANKS!

I will only gauge download speeds over my cable modem/cell phone over a known good quality download site (such as TDSnet's Slackware mirror). I don't trust DSLreports' sites as they are very unreliable metrics of a given circuit's capabilities.

When you tested that download speed did you make sure the file wasn't precached in your browser? Otherwise it'll report a faster download speed than the real one because it was just "Downloading" from your browser cache and verifying the file.

My speeds were a little slower on the dsl reports site.

    Phone: Motorola V551
    connection: Motorola USB bluetooth doggle
    Connection speeds: 55, 57, 66, 59, 75,
    Cingular Orange

Not sure if Cingular has Edge here but even my Netgain didn't benefit the speed.

Anyone have any speed enhancement ideas?

    ADLMAN > Where are you?

It seems as though the v551 should allways get around 100 or so with edge. My t610 with tmobile gets 30 avg with no edge and you guys seem to be getting around double that. Seems as though it should be faster?

And Razor1973 should have a little faster speeds then the v551 cause of class 10. WEIRD.

Could it be the cingular orange side is slow?

Here in UT we only have blue towers so I hope when I get my phone tomorrow it will be fast.

I can get better if Cingular drops out and I hit AT&T's tower though.

(also note that I am using Firefox with maxrequests set to 30 if it makes a difference)

Just to compare - here are the results from the same computer, same spot just taken with a GC 82 card on the SIM from the V551

    Test 1 - Cingular -

    Test site: http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed
    File size: 200 kb
    Test count: 3
All download speeds (kbit/sec): 47, 60, 93 (last one the signal went up one bar to full)
    Average download speed (kbit/sec): 66.6

    Test 2 - AT&T

    Test site: http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed
    File size: 200 kb
    Test count: 3
    All download speeds (kbit/sec): 98, 103, 97
    Average download speed (kbit/sec): 99.3

The AT&T signla was 3 of four bars. As you can see there are differences between networks. These two are on the same tower I am pretty sure. AT&T seems to always run faster no matter where I am at around here.

I can hit 180-190k on a good day. Usually average 80-100k.

I will say that seems faster than I normally get. In the past it's been around 60kbps.

when i used to have att and cingular i would find that my edge speeds were always faster and more consistant with att then cingular.... but that you can take with a grain of salt
