Thanks. In my post, I said that I tried the LG 8000 drivers (I think ver 4.5 to be precise...I'd have to look again)...but I think where I see my problem lying is in the cable itself.

Here is what I have seen from reading through tons of posts trying to get this to work on mine (still unsuccessfully): [Please berate me if I am at all wrong]

    - Futuredial Cable from Radio Shack: (has the bubble)
(These are used mainly for pulling and sending data to the phone like pics, wallpaper, tunes, etc)

    - #19 (for vx6000) - Works, but a tighter fit...no biggie
    - #50 (for vx6100/7000/8000) - fits fine
    - NEED the Prolific driver in order for the CABLE to work

    - Straight through cable: (no bubble)
(This will allow data transfer between the PC and phone for tunes, wallpaper, pics, etc...BUT will also allow the LG drivers (when instaled) to recognize the telephone and therefore be able to be used as a MODEM)

So...here I sit on the road in the middle of a move across the country...waiting until I get to my destination, where I will order a straight through cable and give that a shot....

I ordered the cable from ebay and it recommended the site to download the prolific drivers, which I did.

however when going to usb ports on my pc to see com1 ,2 or 3 I only see com1.

And don't see the phone being recognized in qpst

So I'm guessing the drivers weren't installed after unzipping them and trying to put them in manually in the add hardware wizard
if you could help CHKDG8 or anyone else that would be great

I connected my phone with qpst then i backed up my sound.dat (456bytes) I managed to put a midi as a ringer, i tried to upload a mp3 but the file was there but when i resetted my phone the mp3 wasnt there so i deleted the file, tried it again, qpst kinda froze so i end tasked it. Next step was tryin to put a mp3 as a tune but when i was backing up my aod.dat it was 0bytes.

Can someone tell me how many bytes their aod.dat backup is please?

Is the aod.dat suppose to be 0bytes because the phone didn't have any tunes to begin with?

Also, what is the correct way to add a mp3 as a ringer and filesize? I tried to add a 454kb 27sec mp3 as a ringer but it showed up on qpst but not on the phone after resetting, many thanx in advance

Also, I keep getting a server busy error and the options are switch to and retry. After pressing switch to, the start menu pops up, then after pressing both buttons a couple times the mp3 file is loaded on qpst, but when i reset the phone, it's still not there, dunno whats wrong.

I figured out what i was doing wrong. Each time you reset your phone, it makes a new sound.dat file so you would have to delete it again if you want to add another midi or mp3 on ringers. Best way is to add a couple of them i guess then reset the phone.

Still curious about the default aod.dat file though

Try re-installing your your USB driver. Make sure it's the correct one. I don't know which one you're using so I'm guessing here. Now, connect your phone and cable. Flip open your phone/press ok/go to "setting and tools"/go to "call settings"/go to "data settings/choose "PC Connection"/choose "RS-232C(COM Port)/select 115200.
Now open QPST Configuration. Hit the ports tab. Hit the "Add New Port" button. Now enter sequential COM numbers (COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4). You keep doing this until QPST detects your phone. Once your phone is detected, you hit the "Start Clients" button and choose EFS EXPLORER. That's it! Let me know if this works for you. For uploading go here http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...&page=29&pp=15.
    All this thanks to DERELEKT.

Don't worry noob. We've all been there. First off, the aod.dat file is 0 bytes by default. The reason why you should back-up these files is because you never know when your phone will start acting up. It's just a precautionary measure. All the files that you delete will come back after reset. Better safe than cell-less! Next, try renaming your mp3 like this (50cent.mp3 to 50cent.mid). You'll get a caution message but just click yes. What you can also do is compress your mp3 with any software. I use Nero's wave editor. But the number one thing you're doing wrong is that you're putting them in the wrong file. For ringers you go to dload/sound.dat and delete it. Then you place them in dload/snd. For tunes you go to dload/aod.dat and delete it. Then you place them in brew/shared/aod.

And for your last concern. Close all programs. You CANNOT do anything while uploading with QPST! Don't click on it. Don't even look at it! Just let it do it's thing. Upload as many files as you want in one session. When you're finished and it asks you if you want to reset your phone, I always click NO and wait untill it closes. Then I unplug and reset the phone myself. The reason why I do this is because when I used to click yes, the phone would reset and so would my PC. I'm sure this will help some.

    gif?

Please forgive me for asking this because I know I saw it on here somewhere before. I have searched and searched and can't find it so I have to ask. Can someone tell me how to put a gif file on my 8000. I thought I saw a post on here a some time ago about how to put animated pics on the phone and they would move. If I change the extension I can load the pic but it does not move. If I leave it as a gif it doesn't show up at all. Please help if you can. Thanks for everything!
I love this phone and this forum!

I don't touch the keyboard at all when I'm transferring the mp3 to the phone but I usually get a server busy error. Does this happen to anyone else? I gotta press retry like 19823498712381 times lol

To add images to the phone: by JTPRO

Connect the data cable provided to your VX8000
Load up QPST, in particular the EFS Explorer.
    BACKUP and delete /dload/image.dat
Place image files (apparently BMP, WBMP, PNG, WPNG, JPEG, GIF formats) into /dload/img/
Reset the phone, the images will appear in the "PIX Gallery" in get-it-now.
If you want a picture in the gallery as wallpaper, highlight it and hit the right softkey "options"
and select #3 "Set As" and then choose an option.

*The internal screen size is 176x220 but actual picture size appears to be 176x144. I am fairly certain though that you can use any picture size and it will get rescaled automatically to fit.

Sometimes. But I realized that the only way I get this message is when I hover and click my pointer at it while it's uploading. That's why I tend to leave it alone. I know how you feel. You want to know if it's working and not just frozen right? Like I've mentioned somewhere on here, there should be some sort of timer or countdown that reassures you the program is working fine.

176x180 is the correct size for the wallpaper to fit perfectly on the inside screen. There was another thread that went into this for 100 replys and 176x180 is the correct size. This will allow the picture to be behind the grey bars and go all the way to both the red bars. The WHOLE screen is 176x220 but that includes the red bars so if the pic is this size it will have black bars on each side to compensate.
    Good Luck!!
BTW FWIW I have NEVER been able to get an animated GIF to work either!!

What phone is the cable for? If it says "VX7000", you're fine since that cable and the VX8000's are almost completely compatible. The only difference is that the VX7000's data cable doesn't recharge the phone via USB, but that's no big deal unless you lost or broke the power adapter.

I just received my 7000 cable today, and it recharges my 8000.
