Hopefully, as other good advice is given, a moderator can updated the first post of this thread to mention it.
I stand corrected. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Make sure the ringtones end with the .mid extension. As far as I can tell, I have tried to do it with other extensions, and it always fails.

Does it have to be an auctual midi file, or can it be a mp3 with an extension that was changed?

just rename the file from xxx.mp3 to xxx.mid and send it. Once the file is on your phone rename it.

I'm assuming you have a WAV file. To compress it to MP3 before renaming it as MID, use an MP3 encoder, such as GoldWave and Razor LAME. You can get the shareware version to do this. Go to http://www.goldwave.com for details.

By compress, you mean "re-encode", right (i.e. WAV ==> MP3)?

Read the documentation in that link I provided.

by compress i actually mean make the file smaller, cause the wav files are like 5 mb after i cut them down and the mp3 files are still like 500 kb

yeah something around the word "amplify" or if you only have an eq just raise the level of each to the same DB level. while you are at it you might want to lower the bass because you wont really hear it on the phone.
