Yes, that would definitely do it. An IRC client outputs data continuously, and a busy client would eat up a few megabytes a day. Sometimes the whole screen is refreshed.

However, the data hog for me is Google Local -- that's one big data hog.

Rogers representatives and employees are pigging out on data, they don't know how lucky they are! I know a friend who works at Rogers and tethers his 8700r to his laptop, and doesn't even know people like me can't do that safely without scary bills. They should remove that perk and charge all the employees for data overusage. Rogers will quickly increase the cap as a result from all the complaints.
    Thanks,

Ive done the tether on a car trip from Toronto to Calgary. It's really handy, but it chews up a maddening amount of data. Did 27 MB in under 30 hours, and I was very careful about what I loaded/viewed (it was mostly IRC, but we also had a great little java program that would pull coordinates off a GPS and send them back to a website so our friends could track our progress on google maps).

Cingular is not competition. Cingular is competing in a 330million people country and Rogers is the GSM monopoly in a 30million people country. Supply and demand AND as long as people are willing to pay for it, Rogers won't lower the prices.

I heard Cingular requires 6 months to be in USA reception. If you are outside USA for more than 6 months, you may be hit with shocking data charges. I don't know the details of this, but this is what I heard.

This is scary enough for me to stay away from Cingular for the time being...

On the other hand, it is supposedly not retroactive, so I might get away with it for 6 months. It would be greymarket, just like all these greymarket USA satellite dishes (paying for "legal" USA DirectTV service but receiving it on a dish installed in Canada). Would need a USA billing address as a result.

Just heard about this post in conjunction with a petition for Rogers to not charge astronomical prices for the data plans (for th iPhone) on Net@Nite.

Treat the network like the boss's daughter. Take care of it, don't **** with it, and you better make damn sure it doesn't go down on you.

wow this thread has been lazarus'd. (resurrected)

Its pro that people talk about our threads, but in fairness, hofo is regarded as the best place for cellular knowledge, and is often referenced on tv/internet. Hell, CNN mentionned it last year in conjunction with the pearl launch.
