I remember when I could back up my first hard drive on a mere 10 3-1/2" floppies. That's right, just 10. The hard drive was a massive 10MB. Of course, back then, Windows only took 6 single-sided 5-1/4" floppies for the install. That's a max of 2MB or so of install. Uh, I guess I could mention that was Windows 1.0. On a 286 machine, with an 8/12-MHz switchable processor (that's what the turbo button was for), and 512KB of RAM.

Well, my current rig has a 400GB hard drive, so I got tired of doing backups on DVD's, and didn't want to shell out for a Blu-Ray player. So, I dropped $80 on this 500GB beauty...

Back in the day, a simple 1.2MB HD 3.5" floppy was about a buck a piece. With the 5-1/4" floppies, we used a hole punch to double the capacity back when I had my Commodore 64. Turn a single-sided into a double-sided.

    Two things:
    1. It's on sale!!
    2. I'd think most people who would wear that shirt don't wear size Small...probably why it's on clearance.

Anyone else getting sucked in by the Winter Olympics? I never really have any intentions of watching the games but they end up grabbing my attention.

I remember the first "real" computer (first game system I used was an Atari 2600) I ever used, an Apple II in 3rd Grade around 1979. They didn't even have hard disks, just two 5 1/4 floppy drives, one was used to load the OS and the other was used to save your work, ahh the good ole days!

Yup, I had a 2600...well, actually, I had the Sears version.

My first computer was a TI-99/4A, then the C=64 (for those who don't know, the "=" is intentional). The TI was backed up on a standard cassette, but I did have the 1541 floppy drive for the C=64. I used to get Compute! magazine for the BASIC programs.

I had a Tandy 1000 back in the day, no hard drive, a 5.25" floppy for loading everything, and 256k of memory. That thing lasted until Windows 95 came out. It was good for playing Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego , even if you had to switch floppies to go to different locations. It also came with a disk full of BASIC games, which was fun once we figured out that you could edit the source to change parts of the game.

You guys are so old...the first computer I actually owned was, as opposed to one that I used at school, was way back in 2000, it was a Gateway desktop and ran Windows XP, I'll be damned if I can remember the specs.

I love the winter olympics. I'm almost like a junkie for them

Has anyone gotten the mobile TV from nbcolympics.com to work on their USCC phone? I have not yet. I thought about posting that as a general question, but I'm not sure it's on-topic...

I didn't even know there was one.

You can access all kinds of stuff from your phone at nbcolympics.com but I think to get live TV you have to be an AT&T customer.

Not old, wise and experienced, now go away before I call the cops on you! If you really want to go back, I remember when you had to put a home computer together yourself, ie.Heathkit, and I mean soldering and doing stuff like that, I also remember when hard disk drives were the size of dishwashers (and you carried the platters around in a plastic case with a handle) and had about 10 mb in them, oh and there were still computers (mainframes) that used those reel to reel tapes and punch cards....okay, I stop now lol

    Now THAT's a Hard Disk!

I don't know how I managed 18 years of computing without a Mac. I've been using my MacBook Pro for about a week and a half and I absolutely love it. Windows may be the root of my livelihood but I'm starting the transition to a Mac household now.

Everything about OS X and the hardware is just... the way things ought to be.
