Which is pretty much *against* what they're supposed to stand for, but I agree. I thought for sure that the Verizon/Alltel deal wouldn't go through, or that they would force ATT/Cingular to sell off one of the cellular licenses in areas where they had both, but we all know how that went.
If memory serves, they had to sell off one of the networks in CA/NV. I believe AT&T kept the worst of the two, and sold the 'good' one off to T-mobile USA. I believe the 'good' network was the former Cingular network, but can't remember.
EDIT: They made a lot of promises to the 'blue' customers that they'd have benefits of Cingular's network nationally though. For the most part, those never materialized, without converting to a Cingular customer and SIM. Many AT&T WS customers felt very mistreated in this whole process.

Yes, I remember all the stuff Bobolito and the other mods had to deal with in the Cingular forum.
Yep, this won't likely be good for T-mobile customers, some of which viewed the service as 'the alternative to the AT&T that they hated'. It may help other carriers though.
I do have to wonder when the eventual Sprint and USCC merger will be coming. I say that a bit tongue in cheek, but USCC does kind of have an uphill battle here. Their national roaming is reliant on competition and they are significantly smaller than everyone, yet, they have a good spread of offerings and plans.
I'm also trying to figure out what AT&T really gains, since T-mobile has no 700mhz spectrum. AT&T gained Qualcomm's former FLO spectrum and had their own. Does this mean we're going to have 700, 800, 900, 1800, 1900, 1700/2100, 1900/2100 phones? Sounds like a pain in the butt (and battery) to me.

A friend of mine just went from Tmobile to USCC in Madison WI and her cost went down for more because she could get the plus plan with data on 2 smartphones, etc. Unfortunately I'm not in a Belief plan because I have 3 people who don't use data, text, pix, etc.
If I had a different family, the new plans would be better, but since I don't, they're not (but I'll just keep my plan). I don't really blame USCC for that though.

It's all about how you define the "market"
Obviously those wanted to block any merger want to define the market as narrowly as possible, but I agree with you...there's no chance the market in this instance will be defined as "GSM carriers"

I'd be ok with that in some ways but not others. I've long felt USCC's customer service is significantly better than anyone, includng Sprint's. Sprint did do what I wanted, for the most part, but it just wasn't the same.
6 million customers isn't going to cut it when your majority roaming partner (Verizon) has 94 though. USCC will need to consider hulking up in some manner.

Yep, and doing it by acquiring folks like Metro PCS just ain't going to cut it in the long run. It's going to have to be a bigger step than that.
