The backhaul argument is a great argument. AT&T and Verizon hold a lot of power in fiber and wireline access to these sites in many markets. A situation I didn't consider.
As for MVNOs and Metro cell carriers, I am surprised at how many customers they do have. I do agree that acquisition of these customers alone wouldn't make a dent, especially to a 'full service' carrier. However, the 'new customers' are becoming less and less and most 'new customers' are churned customers from another carrier. At what point will the MVNOs come under fire for being freeloaders at less price? I mean Straighttalk Unlimited is a good deal for people with great Verizon-only coverage and with modest needs, the same could be said of a Virgin Mobile or a Boost (on Sprint).
