Now I can't get the usbser.sys to replace. I renamed the catroot to 2 and booted in safe mode. Originally I thought I replaced them but a second search shows it is still the 2005 file that is 25 kb not 21 kb.
Odd... I can't seem to find a usbser.sys in the catroot folder so why rename it? I had a cartroot and catroot2 now I have a catroot 2&3. do I undo the rename when done? should I have renamed them both?
The only choice I get when in the I386 file is copy or extract.
I have XP pro on a new dell if that helps.

Just boot to SafeMode and do it.
To boot to SafeMode in XP, go to Start > Run > msconfig > click on the BOOTINI tab and select /SAFEBOOT. Apply and restart.
Delete and replace the usbser.sys when you boot up in SafeMode. Then, go back to Start > Run > msconfig > General > and select Normal Startup and restart.
I did the safe mode with f8 at start up before. I just did it as stated above with the same results. Is it possible that dell has enabled some setting that prevents a user from changing those files. Can I get around this?
