Question What do you know about the Samsung A310?

My father is looking at purchasing a new phone from Verizon. He stopped in and was looking at the Samsung A310.

Does anyone know anything about this phone? Positives? Negatives?

How does it compare to other offerings from Verizon?

One important detail, my father has very poor eyesight. The voice dial feature in the Samsung phone is a very appealing feature, as well as the ability to display the numbers on the screen in a large format. I know my Nextel i95cl has these features as well, but what about the phones offered by Verizon? If you suggest a different unit besides the A310, please take this into consideration.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I have the a310. For poor eyesight, this phone would be wonderful. Its hard to miss the button for voicedial, he can just hit that (Hold down the * key) then say the name rather than type in the numbers. But if he had to type in the numbers, the numbers display VERY largely on the really big screen.

The menus and text are all very easy to read and large because of the large screen. I would recommend this out of any of the phones because of such the large screen. The Motorola T720 and Z800 probably have large screens too, but the color can be hard to read sometimes.

    bad ringers

The phone has no standard ringers on it. All the ringers are melodies. Personally I hate that but if that doesn't bother you then go for it.

Regarding scratches, If you buy the OEM holster, it scratches the outside of the phone along the edges an unbelivable amount.

And yeah, the ringers are all melodies, but its not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Theres 1 or 2 normal ones if your father doesnt want to be all fancy he can just use those.

Well we went down to the Verizon store and my father picked up the A310.

Overall it seems to be a nice unit. I truly hope they come out with a firmware upgrade to make the ringers louder. I'd never ever hear the thing if that were my phone, but I guess it will work for him. We spent some time setting it up tonight and I think it's the best phone out there considering my Dad's needs.

One thing that really bugged me is the phone was active for maybe one hour and he already received a spam text message! WTF? Some garbage about fixing your credit. That did not go over very well at all. Does anyone know if there is a way to have text messaging disabled so he will not be able to receive any text messages whatsoever? It's not a feature he needs or will ever use, so it's pointless to keep on there, especially if he's going to get spam.
