    video calling over EDGE?

Or is this someting that is strictly network dependent? I remember a discussion such as this, but I don't remember what was said...........
I see, I said, jealousy, I said, got the whole industry mad at me, I said,

Then B.I. said, Hov remind yahself, nobody built like you, you design yahself,

I agree I said, my one of a kind self, get's stoned everyday like Jesus did,

Well he said, I said, has been said before,

Just keep doin yah thing he said, say no more.

it is network dependant. besides its uses data and not voice. therefore, EDGE does not have enough bandwidth to support.

to prove that it uses data, if you were to recieve and answer a voice call while video calling someone else, the video call immediately ends since voice and data cannot be on at the same time currently.

    from the Nokia 6680 handbook.

This will have to wait until UMTS. The GSM network will not support voice and data at the same time. Currently EDGE would not have enough bandwidth to consistantly support a voice and video connection.

I seem to remember my God Son saying that Verizon is the same... data or voice, but not both. Is this right?

That's correct. The high-speed CDMA-based standard that Verizon uses (and Sprint will use soon) does not support being connected for data and voice at the same time. However, video calls are possible, as it acts as just data - it means that you can't surf the web and be on a phone call at the same time (like you can/will be able to with UMTS)

Actually, GSM can support voice and data at the same time. It's known as Class A GPRS. Most phones that we use are Class B, which allows the phone to register with voice and data services at the same time, but one service must be suspended to utilize the other. Class C devices are only capable of registering with one service (voice or data) at a time. Most GPRS/EDGE PC cards are Class C.

I've used MSN Messenger video conferencing features with my GC82 card and mediaworks while riding a train. Really cool and it work fine, kind of slow the video but cool anyways.

Blkbaloon925, I did not know about the different classes. Interesting. Wonder why they would not make the phones class A?

Bartolo5, I too use my data card on the train frequently. I sometimes take the long distance Amtrak trains. I work this way. I just have to sometimes do things in batches because there is no GSM service everywhere the tracks run.... basically, sometimes the tracks are miles from a highway.

yeah I still dont understand why they dont make class A gprs phones. perhaps cost?

I think they figure who is going to talk on the phone and surf data.

The network has to support Class A, too. I think that the cost of upgrading equipment might be too high for what the providers would get in return. Either that or it would consume too many timeslots if a lot of people started using voice and data simultaneously. Class A is only useful if you want to tether and talk at the same time or send/receive MMS and talk at the same time. If you used a speakerphone or headset you might want it to browse WAP pages while you're talking to someone.
