Super! Thanks for this guide. I'm awaiting shipment of my USB cable and been trying to get all this info gathered in a way I could follow and this looks very helpful!
Is PST 7.1.1 needed or can I substitute in the instructions to use RSD instead?
i know this sounds really dumb, but how do i actualy do this? i thought i was more tech savvy than this, but it's not coming to me. i saved the Driver Zip file from Page #1 in the MPT folder. i tried running the Zip file and it opens up the hundred or so files. i can't actually install anything. do i save all the files in a newly created folder? what program do i use to install and "point to the driver folder"?
Create a folder called 'E815 driver' (or whatever) and unzip to that; point to that folder during install. There is no setup.exe; plug your phone into usb cable, and you'll be asked for the driver.

AFAIK the driver is for XP only.

I thought I was tech saavy too; but, this project was an eye opener!
When I plugged-in my phone, XP(no SP1 or SP2) attempted to add the hardware driver. Instead of selecting the "recommended" auto-detect, you must select the "manual" pick-you-own and reference (browse) to the "motorola" file, which was unzipped from the "e815driver" download. When, I initially attempted to browse to the downloaded file, I couldn't access the driver because the "motorola" file was unzipped into the "e815driver" downloaded filename. So, I just moved/"cut and paste" the "motorola" file into "my documents", which solved the pointing problem.
Thanks, again, to SCLARK1000. After a couple of hours, I was able to follow his/her instructions easily. I am now playing with the multimedia tools and downloading ringers from kazaa lite. (The couple of hours was spent getting Mobile Phone Tools from the internet. I bought the cable from VZW; but, I didn't know it didn't have MPT. So, I searched awhile and eventually found MPT on kazaa lite. The downloaded MPT came with the free upgrade to 3.25. The filesize is 39,425K, if that helps.)
Thanks, again, also to DABLUEST for the PST 7.1.1.
I'm new to this forum, driven here by obvious reasons.
I followed the instructions posted earlier to enable the multimedia functions on my phone, but like several others reported I'm having trouble copying mp3s to the phone successfully. Small songs work but it seems to be a crap shoot when the transfer is going to hang. I did try using the Melody thingie and it seems to work better, but still hangs.
My question is, if I just spend the $20 for a bluetooth usb dongle can I follow the other seem editing instructions for bluetooth and be able to copy files easier? I suspect that is painfully obvious but being new to this, I'm not sure if that is the case. If so, do you still use MPT to transfer data or does it just show up like a USB flash drive?
I tried various things to try to get xfers to work with the cable including changing datarate on the com port, changing around the modem definition in MPT.. nothing seems to work.
Thanks for the work you guys did that got me this far. I can at least get ringtones that don't suck without paying verizon for them!

Remember your phone only has 40mb of memory. Save files to the transflash card (optional accessory), then copy mp3 to phone from that; delete files from phone that aren't being used. Bluetooth transfers can be done in MPT or directly from 'my bluetooth places' in xp; this is best only for pics & ringtones, larger files should be transfered directly to your transflash card either through a sandisk reader or usb cable as transfer times are too slow via bluetooth. As far as your mp3 files, junk in = junk out; so check your files before sending them to phone. It could be there is a maximum bitrate allowable, although I've never had a problem with mp3s.

I for one will be looking for that. Thanks Mark_Venture for extending the offer. Even though i got everything applied and up i had to completely reset everything back to defaults (original seem etc.) because returning handset due to Speakerphone bug . Will, have another go at this with the new one.
Why wont a hacked version work? I download one so it must have been cracked but I updated to 3.25b Is that what you mean by "hacked"?
There was a "hacked' verison of 3.11h floating around that the built in "live update" feature did not work at all. It would usually just say "you have the latest version" type message. Or did not even have the "update" option in the menu I forget which.
