Bluetooth and IR for wireless data

The demand for bluetooth and IR in north america has until now been very very small, however I think demand for these features will begin to increase sharply in the coming years. However, as the data speeds on phones get higher and higher my question is, do bluetooth and IR support transfer speeds high enough as opposed to a USB connection?

Basically, when you look at technologies like 1x, EDGE, 1xEV-DO, and UMTS/WCDMA, will bluetooth and IR supports these high speeds or will they become a bottleneck?

I've just never seen it discussed anywhere.

I don't know about IR, but i know bluetooth is capable of speeds of 1 Mbps. That should be sufficient for a while to come. I also heard that there is a second standard of bluetooth in the works that can handle higher speeds.

BT can get at least 768kb and i believe more.

ir is limited to something like 115200bps tho. not so great at all. in fact, its pretty crappy.

I did a little poking around on the net (various manufacturer sites, etc.) and I can't find ANY specific data transfer rates via IR ports. If anyone knows, I'd be very interested in hearing bout' it. thanks!

I don’t think this is going to be an issue for a while even with EV-DO in place. The burst goes up to 2.4Mbps and that’s the only place it would be a problem. From what I remember the sustained speeds of EV-DO are below 1Mbps but please correct me on this if I’m wrong.

Look for a standard known as Fast InfraRed. It has a peak Transfer rate of 4MB/s. Most laptops now include this version of IR.

typical irda rates are 115k. like yourmom said it can go up to 4mb but you are not likely to see that sort of throughput.
