I have the motorola E815, and want to use it as a modem for my computer. I used to use my LG VX7000 to do this with a cord. I not have my Moto set up for DUN through BT. Will someone please tell me what my username and password is? I cant remember what it used to be, but it wasnt unique, it seems like the username was PHONENUMNER@vzwpics.com and the password was standard. ANY help would be appreciated.
I'd like to get an unlimited EVDO plan for a cellphone and use it for my laptop internet connection.
If you have a XV6600, i730 or some other broadbandaccess enabled PDA where you pay for unlimited what is wrong with tethering to your laptop? Are there any regular phones (non pda) with "broadbandaccess" instead of just the $15 vcast that I can tether with?
I really don't want to pay for a cell phone, voice account, pc card and seperate data account. For one thing, I don't want to have to carry the extra fragile PC card around, I'd like to just use the phone.
I recently bought the E815 and enabled DUN (via bluetooth) by pressing ##dialup. I've found two ways to connect
1)simply dialing into my ISP through the DUN screen on my laptop (provides 14.4 speeds)
2)Dialing #777 into the DUN screen on my laptop then going online through my standard web browser (provides broadband-like speeds)
I know there's more questions, rumors, and opinions than actual facts regarding doing this on this thread. My question is simply whether or not anyone HAS been charged for data by doing this? If you have been doing this regularly via either of these methods please reply to me and let me know either way if you have or have not been charged for data.
Thanks!

P.S.
I noticed that the terms of service mention that "tethering" to a laptop is not allowed, however under the bluetooth accessories section they say that using bluetooth will "untether the headset from the device." I think if it became a [legal] issue it could be argued that by their own admission, if you are connecting through bluetooth, the device is not "tethered." Unfortunately, they probably have enough other language to justify prohibiting it (such as saying that only get it now and WAP applications may be used). At any rate, I think the cost of fighting something like this in court wouldn't be worth it, so I'm just wondering what your experiences have been with charges thus far?
I called and asked if there was a plan that would allow me to connect my E815 to my laptop and was told that the E815 was not capable of doing this. I then followed up by saying "since you're telling me there is no way that my phone is capable of transmitting data from my laptop, is there any way possibe that data charges can or will show up on my bill?" She replied "no."
Obviously I wasn't going to tell her on a recorded line that I have been doing this since I got the phone. The guys at the local Verizon store weren't very helpful, but were all quite interested in learning how I was able to do so.
Now, as for the term "tethering," I have some interesting points that I found on Verizon's site. They state that
You cannot use your phone for...
"(2) for any applications that tether your phone to laptops, personal computers or other devices for any purpose."
However, it also says that...
"Bluetooth takes wireless communications to a new level. With Bluetooth wireless technology, you won’t be tethered to your phone anymore. You can make hands-free calls virtually whenever and wherever you want."
By Verizon's own admission above Bluetooth "untethers" a phone from a headset, so I think it's pretty easy to extrapolate this as saying that unless you are connected via a physical (i.e. USB) cable, then yor phone is not "tethered." I think one could easily make the argument that the tethering clause becomes null and void if you are using Bluetooth to make the connection.
The only thing that I can find that would make accessing the net via bluetooth a TOS violation is
V CAST cannot be used: (1) for access to the Internet, intranets or other data networks except as permitted via Get It Now and getWeb; (3) for uploading, downloading or streaming of movies, music or games unless offered through Get It Now; (4) for sustained, high bandwidth applications, including, without limitation, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, Voice over IP (VoIP), or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing; and/or (5) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections.
But I can only find this as applying to VCAST, PTT, and Smart Phones. I have an America's Choice Plan without VCASAT and I can't find this language in my TOS. Maybe an oversight on Verizon's part, but hey who knows.
I think the bottom line is that if Verizon cancells your service and charges you $175 are you really going to spend your time and money fighting them in court? They know that 95 out of 100 people are just going to pay the charge and switch to another carrier, or stop using the data after they get a warning
Can a moderator please move all closed but pertinant discussions involving EVDO tethering into this thread? For example this thread offered important new information about TBarCYa being charged for data usage and his subsequent efforts to clarify this with Verizon.
In my case, I had been charged the minutes used for data access and that was it. Unfortunately, their system never stopped billing a particular call which is why I had a problem with it and once they realized that I was right, they did eventually correct the problem.
nbro1, you quoted something from the TOS that you found on Verizon's site... Can you post a link to it?? I have been unable to find that document.
Thank you.
PS, I asked the moderator to unlock that thread because it was not about EVDO tethering and only strayed there briefly. Hopefully, we will all know the answer shortly.
i have the lg8100 (t81vzv01) tethered by bluetooth
im thinking about adding the $79.95 unlimited internet plan just to see if i can use that as my only internet service.
i play games and dload alot from newsgroups
here are my questions:
1: is it ok to dload alot from newsgroups with that $79.95mo added feature?
2: what exactly do i have to do to connect at EV-DO speeds after i add that feature? i usually just create an internet connection from windowsxp and enter the "#777", "login" and "pass" and bam im up and running on QNC or EN but im not sure for EVDO
3: i have another computer in the house too. if i bought an additional bluetooth usb adapter would both computers be able to have internet access at same time?

There are many references to "tethering," so you're best to just do a search on Verizon's site, but here is a link to "tethering" as it applies to Ptt. I cannot find anything prohibiting it on the regular Americas Choice plans.
This is copied from the Data Tech Support FAQ sheet:
What is the Bluetooth Dial-up Networking (DUN) profile?
The Bluetooth dial-up networking profile allows the use of the Bluetooth handset as a modem (please consult the Bluetooth functionality chart to see if a specific Verizon Wireless device supports Bluetooth DUN). In this configuration, Bluetooth acts as a replacement for the cable that is used to connect the computer to the handset in tethered mode. The user has several steps to take before Bluetooth dial-up networking can occur:
The laptop/computer must have Bluetooth capability (typically by using a PCMCIA card or USB dongle for hardware and the associated Bluetooth client for software).
The laptop/computer must be paired to the handset
A dial-up networking profile must be created on the laptop/computer (e.g., manually created using the Microsoft wizard or automatically created by the VZAccess client software).

i had talked to verizon before about the $79.95 data plan for unlimited internet and they told me if i added that feature i would not get in trouble for useing the phone as a modem. as long as i stayed within the policy for that data plan as far as usage goes. so im not worried about getting in trouble for tethering it to my desktop.
im just not sure if i can connect to bluetooth desktop computers to the 1 bluetooth phone at same time and use net
im also not sure how to configure the phone and what software i need (if i need any) to get connected at EVDO speeds after i add that data plan
and if i can dload from newsgroups alot of megabytes even though when u dload from newsgroups each file is relatively small but u dload alot of small files to meg bigger files
ex:
i select 1 of 99 50meg files now even though i dload 1 50 meg file that 50meg file is split into prob 50 1 meg files so it dont appear to be 1 large file dload cause its not continuous like if i just dloaded a 50meg file
it shows as 1 50 meg file but in RL it is split into several smaller files
i had to get rid of VCAST to get $79.95 unlimited internet as an added feature
lg8100 with bluetooth to usb connector (still have to keep it in 1x only mode in secret menu)
with just that setup i can only connect at 1x speeds
1: do i need some verizon software to connect at EVDO speeds?
im dloading that vzaccess manager right now but at 2.8KBs its gonna take a while
2: to install that vzaccess i read that i might need cd2 of the mobil office kit or to have another older verizon app called "dialer" already installed before i install the newer verizon "VZAccess.exe"
3: can someone tell me where that dialer app is still avail?
4: does verizon have an ftp address that lets u get their older software?
5: will i be able to take my phone out of "1x mode" in secret menu and connect at EVDO speeds with verizon access manager software?
6: will i have to get a usb data cable instead of useing bluetooth to be able to get fastest speed as possible
ok thanks

In the words of Gilda Radnor, "Never mind." I'm glad to hear that TBarCYa was not using his E815 as a modem to upload software corrections to the Hubble Telescope!
I've read this entire thread......and did searching on Verizon's site...but can't find the actual link
Can someone give me the link to Verizon's site with the TOS specically for V-Cast?
As others have said, my bill states "Unlimited KB" with the V-Cast Service, so AFAIC, the TOS specifically for V-Cast would override any other TOS. I haven't read anything on Verizon's website for not allowing Tethering specifically with V-Cast. From all the chatter here, I assume it is there, I just can't find it.
