It doesn't come across as trying to educate, it sounds like a veiled threat. It sounds too much like someone either "Playin' The Role" or pretending to have the inside track with VZ info on the forum.
Besides, who made you the mommy? Why do you feel you have to educate all of us about the evils of tethering?
I think every one gets it that you and a few others are opposed to tethering. Your reasons for this attitude are unclear. Why should you care if anyone gets billed or ETF'ed or not? Please explain that if nothing else.
To the best of my knowledge, VZ does not have any data plan available for handset users to tether to a laptop. Not even the $80 data plan may be applied to an E815.
So, if you want to call tethering "Theft Of Service" please describe what service we're stealing and how much value VZ has placed on this service. As a matter of law, you cannot steal something that has no value. That's how they determine if theft is petty or grand theft for example. You're really clutching at straws to stoop to call it stealing. Worst case is it's breach of contract.
So if you want to help everyone as you infer, come up with a solution or workaround. Don't just imply the End Is Near.
Ok, I hate to say it, but this is something I've been saying ever since I confirmed with Verizon about no-EVDo tethering but the naysayers have been thinking it's sack of ****. Well here's the proof!
If you really expect an interesting signature, look elsewhere ... - AT&T *really* amazed me, but their spotty 3G network lost me.
So, does this mean those of us who use the 1x to tether should stop as well? I only use it to occasionally check email and such on the road while consulting.

1x is fine if you removed VCAST from your account, and Premiun Network Access, and lock it to 1x. I've transfered enough data on my E815 that my account should be flagged but I have had no calls yet but I only do it w/ 1xRTT.

I never had VCAST, since AFAIK, I still am on an AC I plan. Its been more than 2 years since Ive started it, never changed it, and I dont live in a VCAST/EVDO area. I do however, get a sweet 15% discount through my employer, which is why I havent changed it.

Well, the bad thing is, if I change my plan, I lose the discount, since my company no longer deals with Verizon, and deals with Cingular. At least thats what the GPM tells me anyway
To the original poster... you should take all this with a gain of salt. Any "insider" you find here could easily just be a plain old store rep who once spoke with a low-level support tech and got a big head over it. I know at least 8 VZ employees ranging from plain old rep to store manager, and none of them, even the ones who work together, can get their stories straight. They're my friends and I can't trust THIER "insider intel". Why trust some jacka$$ on the Internet who may not even have Verizon service, much less be a "VZ Insider". There is a strong possibility that many who claim to be "insiders" are actually nobodies. I've lurked a very long time and I suspect 1 or 2 folks of, shall we say, using the natural anonimity of the Internet to their advantage.
Even if they are VZ reps or whatever, knowing how VZ treats these reps I can say with some degree of comfort that they really don't know much more about the inner workings of VZ than we do.
Not to take away from all the great info many folks post here. It's greatly appreciated by my myself and I'm sure others. But really, most (if not all) of the tech stuff I've seen on these boards is perfectly doable by any mid-level programmer who takes the time do download the BREW SDK from Qualcomm (free I might add) and read through it.
Nothing I've ever seen here is indicative of "insider knowledge". All it tells me is that there's a good group of smart folks contributing to the board.
As far as me, my last post in this thread is what I think the deal is. But hey, that's me. I'm just going to keep doing what I do. You should decide for yourself.
This is kinda a stupid question but I have National Access Unlimited, and I locked my phone to 1xRTT. Am I going to run into a problem down the road with this and find myself on the wrong end of an ETF? I don't use the EVDO network (nor can I access it, I don't have premium network access on my account).
I should of re phrased my statement..
If you are caught tethering via evdo that is where the problems come in.
first of all i have tethered while in an evdo area and i get 1x speeds on my e815. I believe it switches over to 1x when it makes the connection. Second of all, verizon does not care if we check email and browse the web using our phone as a modem, its the idiots who use it as a constant on connection downloading music and playing online games who get charged. Third of all, stop calling verizon! The one thing that is going to **** us, is you people calling verizon, one day the question you ask will go up the ladder far enough or they will realize too many people are calling in saying they can do it, and you are going to screw us all. You are not going to get any kind of definitive explantation from them, i think that is plain obvious by now! its always the same crap and like 10 different explanations. The only thing you do by calling and being a **** baby with them is risk screwing us. Just use it limited and check your bill! Heres an idea, instead of calling verizon why not use it a few times in 1 month, and check your bill that way if you are charged per kb it wont be that much.
1. I see no reason for anyone to lie.
2. Not post counts but join dates should shed some light on who is refutable and who is not.
3. I agree with Mike240se. STOP CALLING VERIZON!!! Do you call the cops to ask if it is okay that you always go 10 over the speed limit on elm street??? HELL NO!!!
