Yes, I've seen the movie, though I do understand the difference between movie and reality.

You're right, I'll ignore these types of threads from now on. I'll let new people get false expectations about if it's allowed or not.

Of course I won't stay away, but I'd be willing to just state the facts as the answer to the question posed and leave it at that...I won't try to argue with people who think that something that is blatantly against the "agreement" is ok to do anymore.

What you don't seem to understand is the difference between this board and reality.

What the new people will be getting is not false expectations, but users who are reporting their real world experiences as they relate to the questions asked. Not some philosophical discussion about the morality of tethering.

By the way, if the impossible happens, and I go to court over this with VZ, the first thing I'll show the Judge is my bill. You know what it says, don't you? Here's a cut & paste:

Current Data Plan: V Cast Vpak $15
    Monthly charge: $15.00
    Unit allowance: unlimited kb

You don't think people should tether with EVDO, we get it.

    Cellularsales,

A few counter points to your last post.

It's posted on the VZ web site that there are 44 cities with Broadband/EVDO service currently, so we're both off. You're closer though as long as the description "Broadband/EVDO" means BOTH not one or the other.

For my old Audiovox CDM8900 there never was a Mobile Office Kit offered when I bought it, I had to go into the LG accessories page and use that. The cable, by the way, was interchangeable, as was the setup in MOK. I learned that info right here on HoFo. So that argument is null & void as far as I'm concerned. I'd imagine one of the current Motorola Kits will work just fine. I'm using Bluetooth with my old desktop software, but I suspect the USB cable works for many Mot. models.

I guess I'm just surprised that every time someone starts a new thread about tethering, about 3-4 regulars jump in to claim all the bad things that "Might" happen by using EVDO for data downloads. One Bozo even said he'll have a good laugh when I get terminated. Doesn't sound like someone is trying to help when they are hoping you get busted. Why would that make them feel better? Another jerk claimed you can get back billed for about $5,000, because he's seen it happen. Who should we believe, and why? Should we listen to the people who are using the service without problems, or those who seem to have an agenda but cannot support their position with facts?

As far as what percentage of EVDO phone users want data capability, you say 1 out of 10 WANT TO use it as a modem. I wonder how many actually USE IT as a modem? How is it that all these people come to you to find out about this type of service? Or, do you bring it up first? Do you think one out of every 10 people who have cell phones also have a laptop, AND want to use their cellphone for internet access?

    Enquiring minds...
the website hasn't been updated to include many of the cities that have been launched in the past few weeks. if you want a list of all of them there are threads that list them all.

yes there were some kits that were not offered but typically the LG kits function with the audiovox as they share the same charges and data cables. and the point of bringing that up is? are you saying that if you can find something to make it work then that automatically makes it okay to do so? the current motorola kits do not work with the e815 becuase they do not have the proper drivers to have the phone as a modem. you have to find these drivers or use bluetooth to get it to work. how do i know? because i own the phone, a bluetooth dongle and a data cable.

all i'm repeating is what has been told to me by our data team in the tampa call center. i also recently got an email from our indirect account manager here about this. a store sold a vcast phone and a mobile office kit to someone for use of EVDO. we are told specifically in this email not to do this. i'll post that up here after i get done responding.

1 out of every 10 people use the phone as a modem. i sell cables and dongles all the time to clients and set them up all the time. i just don't do it with any vcast capable phones. as far as data percentages though counting txt and pics our percentage is much higher than that, more like closer to 80%. as for who brings it up, i don't talk very much in a sales presentation. i ask open ended questions and let them talk about how they want to use it. we are in a very centralized location here in tampa and have many travelers passing through. a large percentage of those people need internet on the go. a few feeler questions and that's usually all it takes.

as i said before, i'm not agaisn't tethering. i'd rather just take precautions to not to have to deal with the possibility of anything happening. i want my clients to have the best possible experience that they can with our company. i'll post the email in my next reponse.

email that i just recieved today. i can't attach some of the email addy's as they are confidential and internal only.

In dealing with this customers account I learned for the first time that
    > Vcast phones cannot use a mobile office kit to connect to the internet. I
    > was told by our data and technical support that this has always been the
    > case, and we should not indicate to our customer that these phones can use
    > national access or broadband. They have advised me that the use of a
    > mobile office kit for these phones would only be to manage their contact
    > list on the computer. I called the store manager where he purchased the
    > phone, and she was also unaware that these phones could not gain access to
    > the internet via the mobile office kit. I was hoping that something could

Ok well desptite all of your warnings, I went ahead and called CS, and proceeded to tech support, and then to tier 2 tech support. My overall question was about bluetooth tethering with my e815. I asked him about what would and wouldn't violate my TOS and how to keep my phone in 1x while tethering.

This person wasn't sure, so went to confer with some other tech support guys. He came back a few minutes later, he told me, it is possible to have your phone go only 1x while tethering, but he was not allowed to tell me how to do it.
So i asked him, If i tether in a 1x service area with my EVDO phone, am I going to be violating my TOS. He told me affirmingly, No. I asked him, If I were to somehow figure out a way to tether in an evdo area in 1x mode, will I be violating my TOS, No. So i proceeded to reword those questions, coupled with, If I use my evdo phone to connect using national access, tethered to my laptop using bluetooth, in a 1x service area, will I be charged anything besides minutes on my plan? No. Do I need any data service on my plan to avoid charges? No. So I will be charged nothing but airtime? Correct. Does the fact that I have the $15 vcast package change this at all? No. Does my airtime still get used up if i have the vcast package? "You would have to talk to CS on that one"

I think this about sums it up. I have this tech support guy's name, He told me what I can and can't do, which should by all means be binding. This means, when I get anything resembling a data charge on my bill, I will be calling up verizon, and they will be retracting the charges because I was told that I could. This is completely different than being ignorant, because I did everything that I reasonably had to do to ensure that what I'm doing is well within the TOS.

And if you want to get mad, because people like me might be ruining it, o well. I'm not going to use this service, and violate my TOS based on hearsay that "it's probably OK"

If anyone knows how I can make my 815 force into 1x for tethering, hooked to my iBook, email me and let me know. Thanks

tethering on 1x using minutes of use is not the issue. it's tethering using the EVDO connection with Vcast that is the issue.

Legal Tethering over EVDO now available!

Ok. If you want EVDO tethering, it's now available. Here's what data and CSRs told me:

Offically no EVDO phone can tether, but they made is sound like this is changing.

Tethering over 1xRTT is alright if you do NOT have VCAST on your account, and you do not have Premium Network Access and your phone locked to the 1xRTT network. If you have VCAST and tether on 1xRTT or EVDO, you can be terminated (though Verizon will just warn you first).

Tethering over EVDO is not alright unless you have an EVDO data plan.

The $60 dollars 1xRTT National Access plan is no longer available for EVDO phones.

The $80 dollar EVDO National Access/Broadband Access (aka Data Card plan), is now available. To add it, call up your CSR, have them delete VCAST, and add feature code: 1SULT

Their are other EVDO tethering plans that are limited in data usage, ranging in various allowances, The CSRs can tell you more.

Just to say something, EVDO is FAST, so it's replacing my main broadband access over the net, and $55 dollars for a wired line vs 80 dollars a month for EVDO access in any major city (which also works for me as I do travel quite a bit).
If you really expect an interesting signature, look elsewhere ...
    - AT&T *really* amazed me, but their spotty 3G network lost me.

    that's awesome!!!

$80 for a month for a high speed data does seem like a bit much though...
however, I JUST got my laptop tethered to my phone via bluetooth, and this seriously awesome...and of course I have it locked on 1x.

    thanks for the info sonic.

Trust me, once you get to wireless freedom in your pocket, you'll never figure out how to got along w/ QNC or 1xRTT. (I used QNC for a year and a half, and 1xRTT for the last few months). What I recommend is getting it for a week, trying it and then removing it (you'll get prorated the time you have it on). As for the $80 dollars a month, it also includes airtime w/ Mobile Web 2, but doesn't work w/ VCAST (and you can't have VCAST on the same plan which kinda sucks if you like it).

Is it possible to be addicted to forums, because I think I am...
    anyways...

Do you mean try out the new Data plan, or are you talking about me tethering to my laptop using it locked to 1x?

As for the $80 including minutes, did you happen to catch how many minutes the plan included? Because that could def. make it worth while if you could get a cell phone with 450 minutes, Mobile Web 2.0, and not to mention a high speed internet connection, ANYWHERE you go...

Oh, I forgot to methon. Once the 80 dollar plan is added, NO AIRTIME IS USED. You can tether for hours and it will not use a single minute, day, or night. You really start to love tethering on your commute (assuming if you commute).
