Until now, you've not been able to add it to regular Verizon phones, just the data cards. Trust me, I've been trying this for a few months.
Really? I've always thought that they allowed this. I remember someone posting that "Verizon will be more than happy to add a data plan to your phone" (i.e. get more money from you).
My rep even mentioned it to me before the E815 and VX8100 were released..

They would only add National Access - 1xRTT only. Two months of repeated failure proved that National Access 1xRTT/EVDO ($80) is new.
tethering on 1x using minutes of use is not the issue. it's tethering using the EVDO connection with Vcast that is the issue.
Did I not read somewhere that according to verizon, tethering with an EVDO "capable" is against TOS??
That seemed to be what I was reading, not only in this forum
also, i have the vcast package, am i still getting charged minutes or is it included now?? I did tell the TS guy that i had vcast on my account, no problem he said
I work for WDTS and we you could always put the EVDO on a EVDO capable phones. It's not new. You must had called in and just got a bunch of uninformed reps or something.
1X Speed: real world about 100kbps
EVDO speed: real word between 300-500kbps, bursts up to 2.4mbps
I can't see paying $80 a month and not getting an additional line with a data card. Tethering ties up your phone, and Bluetooth is not as fast as EVDO anyway.
This assumes, of course, that your laptop has a PC Card slot, which the 12" PowerBook and iBooks don't.
Tethering over 1xRTT is alright if you do NOT have VCAST on your account, and you do not have Premium Network Access and your phone locked to the 1xRTT network. If you have VCAST and tether on 1xRTT or EVDO, you can be terminated (though Verizon will just warn you first).
Tethering over EVDO is not alright unless you have an EVDO data plan.
Ok well i called tech support, and ended up talking to tier 2 tech support, and asked them about tethering with my vcast phone, and vcast on my account. The TS rep told me that as long as I was not tethering in an evdo area, I was not violationg my TOS, and was fine. He also said if I was to somehow lock my phone to 1x(he wasn't allowed to tell me how), it would not violate my TOS, even though I have Vcast on my account. granted, TSRs are not god, so he may have been telling me something incorrect, but the fact is, that's what I was told, heard it from the horses mouth, so when verizon calls me and says, "You've been tethering with your vcast phone", I'm going to tell them, "yea ya know I thought there might have been some conflict with this, so I called TS and they told me It was perfectly fine, and I would not need any data plan and Here is the name of the TSR i talked to."
This is alot different than me saying, "yea I read on a forum that such and such was alright"
The TSR i spoke to is a verizon wireless representative, if he mis-speaks, and gives me misinformation, it's his fault, not mine, I have to take that information as being completely accurate.
Here's the problem: The typical consumer cannot know when or how to turn off EV-DO. If Verizon does not provide a "turn EV-DO off" button in the general settings of the phone, it is impossible for a consumer who wants to tether with NA MOU to do so, and thus, is not in breach of the contract because they are making a good faith effort to comply with said terms while still maintaining the functionality of NA MOU.

You can't do it with VCAST on your account because that acts like National Access Unlimited - it doesn't count against your minute usage. The No Tethering on the VCAST contract means tethering in general.
That's iffy... in theory, if the minutes used does not exceed the bucket of minutes remaining at the end of the month, the customer is not in breach because of the underlying NA MOU provisions. Now, if they were to exceed the bucket of minutes, I agree that would be a breach.

It's easier for Verizon just to slam VCAST tethers even if they aren't over the minute usage. IMHO, Tethering > Crappy Videos that like to stall.
It's always in debate as to how well that can be differentiated, but, Verizon is already in fear of people watching live TV all day (which is why MobiTV isn't out yet), so, I think there will be greater bandwidth concerns than casual tethering...
If you aren't exceeding your minute bucket in terms of MOU usage, I wouldn't worry about it.
so is there any way at all to make it so it will still charge my minutes when i use national access if i have vcast on my account?? I like vcast, and want to have it, but I use the national access alot lately. No way to have the best of both worlds?
And for what it's worth, the TSR Told me I could do that, so legitimately I can't get in trouble for it.

Well, since Verizon recently made it that EVDO plans can be added to the E815 (they always existed but the system would reject it, and throw up an error when adding it), it's possible they'll add a VCAST option, but I doubt it. You could inquire, but call Data tech support, they'll be more understanding.
