Hey...wait a second, do you have the $19.99 internet plan ollywompus?
it's complicated Kspecial. I pay for the 5.99 option from T-Mo, but due to some system glitch, i've had all ports open for the last 9 months or so. I still use the wap.voicestream.com option, but all ports are open.

not that i'm complaining about this glitch!

Hmmm...see that's strange because I can also visit HTTP sites while tethered with that plan, yet can't get into Hotmail.

Just an update for the curious...

I just tried this (based on the original post's instructions) and it works well.

I'm a new subscriber (just a few weeks), with the 5.99$ TMobile Web option.
I have a Tmobile branded Motorola V330 (unmodified)
I was using my desktop computer with a CompUSA brand BT dongle.
I was using Firefox as a browser on Windows XP SP2

I paired the phone to the computer, then set up the modem as described in the first post, using the wap.voicestream.com settings.

Then I went into my proxy settings and used the proxy settings in the first post. I checked "use proxy for all protocols", so the proxy info was applied to https and other protocols as well.

I was able to browse http websites (all I tried), and https websites (I tried bank of america and paypal). I didn't try a mail program or chat (I don't use them).

Speed test indicated that I was pulling about 78kbs. It felt a little quicker than 56k, subjectively. Not bad, and clearly a decent EDGE connection here in St. Louis, MO.

So anyway, just wanted to let people know, if anyone else has a similar same setup, and can't get it to work, post here and I can try to help.

Next step is to let the software on my phone access the web as well... Its weird to me that I can browse HTML with a tethered computer, but the phone itself can't browse HTML. I've got a working Opera installation, but it isn't able to connect to the Opera server, of course. I'm waiting on my USB cable, and hopefully I can start tweaking the phone's actual settings and enable internet and proxy access for java apps... If anyone has any tips on that, let me know.

    peace,
    sam

I was able to log into Bank of America over https. I'll try it again at home if you'd like, and I'd be happy to look over any settings for you.

I know the post was nothing new, just throwing out a 'yes, it still works' since there seems to be a lot of 'have they taken it away? does it still work? does it only work on grandfather plans?' questioning around here, a fresh positive can be helpful.

    peace,
    sam

to phil. some phone doesn't have the capable of surfing the web, those phone can only read wap.
As for some others $5.99 ppl who wants to surf w/out blocking, add a $19.99 for a day then cancel. That's the secret. Lets hope T-mobile doesn't find that out. Long live the free internet, I mean $5.99 :-D. My speed? Download = 83 kbps now (10.4 KB/sec transfer rate).

This doesn't work for everyone in all markets though, as an FYI. A buddy in New Hampshire has tried to do this a couple of times, it won't work, just goes back to regular t-zones.

It sounds like you're in the wrong menu, you want to be in the Bluetooth Modem Properties menu. So go to your Start Menu, Control Panel, Phone and Modem Options, click the Modems tab, highlight your Bluetooth modem, and click properties. Under the Advanced tab is the Extra Intialization Commands box, and that is where you will fill in your yada yada yada.
