    Exclamation Sony Ericsson P990i Discussion

Its official :: Sony Ericsson P990

Sony Ericsson emphasised its continued commitment to Symbian OS today with the announcement of its next generation smartphone to the global development community. The P990 will be the first commercially available smartphone to adopt the enhanced Symbian OS version 9.1 and UIQ 3 software platform. This flagship UMTS smartphone is Wi-Fi enabled, has a 2 megapixel camera with autofocus and features a new hardware keyboard beneath the flip-down keypad. The phone will start shipping during Q1 of 2006

The P990 is the next in a line of successful Sony Ericsson smartphones - the P800, P900 and P910 – and is based on the same proven concept and recognisable form factor. All have been popular with users, operators and software....

    I've noticed that there isn't a 990a 850mhz version just yet.

Was the p910a announced at the same time? I'm guessing that since UMTS ain't happening in the US for awhile, they skipped us for now. EDGE/900 is interesting though. Why EDGE/900 and UMTS?

Nice looking phone. Still can look like a phone when you want it to. You can all go bezerk about the pad on the phone, but the fact of the matter is that is what the market is demanding (Treo, HP's new PPC phones, etc.), especially in the US.

Fingers crossed on an 850 version. And WiFi, cool.

To ensure a large proportion of applications are available on the new Symbian and UIQ software platform when the P990 goes on sale, Sony Ericsson has decided to announce the smartphone well in advance of availability so that developers have time to create and certify as many applications as possible.
great... which means u got lots and lots of time to save up...

and no 850 for those in the americas = not really caring about the high-end market here still... ah well, what can we do?

No details on CPU. Hope they won't put a lame slow CPU, which Symbian devices tend to do..

Why did they put the keyboard on the phone instead of the flip? Will that mean you won't be able to take the flip off?

Flip is removeable, just thumboard is built into base. And im using a P910i on T-Mo in the US, so without the 850 you should be able to get away with it. Although many are going to wait for that 850 version.
