Thanks, seems like a lot of work to me. By how do you save your prefs in bitpim?

I had a similar issue whe I first got started messing with this.

If you goto the phone settings in bitpim you see a browse button for com port. It should detect something. You have to select the "Samsung CDMA modem diagnostic serial port" It should be something like com5 or com6 or something like that. The exact number isn't as important as being able to see it at all.

Take it one thing at a time. Make sure you see a Samsung CDMA modem in Device manager under Modems and that you have a Samsung CDMA modem diagnostic serial port under Ports (COM & LPT) before anything else. If you don't see these you WILL NOT get bitpim to work.

I can see both cdma modem under Modems and cdma modem diagnostic serial port under Ports. I do not see any
yellow mark next to these items like other users. I started
bitpim (8.0.3) and see the modem and port (COM5) so I selected
COM5 and proceed to let bitpim detect the phone. All I got
was phone not detected Do you have other
suggestions? Thank you. Your input has been very helpful
but I still need just one more thing to get it right, I hope.

BitPim WON'T Detect the phone. It's an unsupported phone. Instead go to
EDIT > Settings and select OTHER CDMA phone and for the COM Port and select whatever COM port is assigned to the CDMA diagnostic port.

I see. I went to the file sytem tab and saw the file structure.
I can see some files but they are in binary thus unreadable.
Anyways, I see the cable, driver and bitpim working as they
were intended. It's too bad that a850 is not supported. I
will contact bitpim developers to see if I can work with them
make a850 a supported phone. Thanx.

Once the file is open, double-click on "dynamic_range_els" on the left side of the program, and it should pull up a list of all your media and show you what the file is actually saved as on the phone. Then just resend the file to your phone with Bitpim, using the same exact filename that you saw in current_prefs.db. Reboot phone, then delete the file using "erase" on your phone. Do not use Bitpim to delete the file! (I think this is where some of the problems are created)

One thing to keep in mind is that when you see the list of media in EasySQLite 2, special characters show up wierd. For example:
I have a file on my phone listed as "don't_phunk_with_my_heart_ " on the phone's tone list.
Shows up as "/ff/melodies/my/brew/don\047t_phunk_with_my_heart_\050ch.mid" in EasySQLite 2
The "\047" is an apostrophe and the "\050" is a "(". When renaming the file to send to your phone, just use the special characters. For example... if I wanted to remove this song from my phone because it got stuck on there, I would send a file to my phone named "don't_phunk_with_my_heart_(ch.mid". Hope this helps. Reply if you need any clarification. This worked for me, so good luck!

should we resend the file by just making new file in the same directory or should we "overwrite" the file that we're trying to delete?

Just send it to the phone in the same directory as the old file. You're not really overwriting it because it is already gone from your phone... it's just the name that you can't get off the list. At least that's the way it worked from me.

I can get bitpim to recognize my phone (850) but it doesn't have the same file structure as the one listed on page 1. Which folder do i dump the ringtones? Here's a file tree:

You'll have to experiment. Try /melodies/my/drm. That should work. See if you can set them as alert, not ring, sounds. If you can't you'll have to try someplace else. my guess would be /brew/ringer/nondrm. You could always buy 1 ringtone and see where GIN puts it and then put your files there.

i would, but seeing as this is my 3rd samsung within a year (2 a670's broke) I'll wait for another 850 user to be the guinea pig.

Write the files to mm/mvg/drm and the restart your phone.

To set as alert sounds for voicemail, go to Menu > Settings & Tools > Sounds > Alert Sounds and pick 1. Txt Message, 2. Pix Message or 3. Voicemail Message.

hey guys i have a samsung a970, bitpim shows that my ringtones are there and my phone has them under Get It Now tones, but no sound is playing when i select my ringtones. I even changed the tones to .wav but still no sound plays. I put the files both under melodies/my/drm and the mm/mvg/drm folder but no sound comes out. Can anyone help me out?
