I just wish there was a way to voice dial through the 700W. it's very nerve-racking that it lacks a feature that most crappy Bluetooth phones support.

What are some of the other bugs that are being addressed with aku 2?

    Data Plan

    Hi Gang,

if I get a Treo 700W without the data plan I will still be able to connect to EVDO and all that, it'll just use my minutes correct? With the push functionality of the Treo 700w, would the internet be considered "always on" thus sucking up all my minutes within a day or two or is this something I can safely do?

NO. ABSOLUTELY NOT. YOU WILL BE CHARGED THE PER KB RATE WHICH COMES OUT TO $15/mb.

Just to get back on topic, it's pretty darn difficult to compare "Voice Command" to features that "most crappy bluetooth phones" have.

The issues here are not insignificant.

    1) There is no bluetooth standard. There's a bunch of them. They are not all the same.

    2) VC has far more functionality, and requires better voice quality. This also means the the fact that overwhelmingly most BT headsets sample voice at 8kbits, which is insufficient for the degree of voice recognition needed for Voice Command (which requires 16bit).

Summary? This is not a MS evil empire issue. It will hopefully be resolved in the relatively near future, but will also require hardware changes in the form of 16bit sampling BT headphones. Therefore, AKU (which will be released relatively soon, and NOT because of the advanced BT capabilities but for other more relevant enterprise application issues) will not likely have any effect on this specific issue.

And no, I don't have a darn thing to do with MS.

    Hi,

    The problem is this.
MS can claim that you can't do all this stuff over BT, but you can.
    I had a Samsung i600 with a BT adapter and a Jabra BT200 headset.
The quality was fine to do everything.
I could do Digit Dial, Dial by name, Contact List, etc....

Funny, when I use my old BT adapter on the 700w along with my BT500 things work quite nicely.
Let's see, that would be A/D -> BT tx -> BT rx -> D/A -> A/D to the phones hardware and voice stack.
Much worse than just going to the phone.

Just bull. They should say, they just didn't do it and quit making excuses.

I know it works fine through BT because you can do it with a BT adapter.

Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters. -- Daniel Webster

    Uh, not so fast.

There are some (very few, but note in my post I specified the overwhelming majority of BT headsets sample at 8kbits - not all) BT devices that don't downsample to 8kbits. Which those are I have no idea.

The fact that your BT adapter claims to function where normal BT headsets do not would indicate to me that there is in fact an issue around either the BT profile(s), or the single/dual channel and 8kbit vs 16kbit issue. Frankly, what it seems to point at is the single vs dual channel since the Treo may separate voice vs BT functions on separate channels, where your adapter may not - therefore eliminating that issue. If so, then it's a Palm design issue and not a WM5 issue. At least theoretically that's possible if not likely. Just not sure based on the limited information available.

For the record, there are also reports of people who have NOT been able to make Voice Command function through a BT adapter and not just a BT headset.

MS did NOT claim that "you can't do all this stuff over BT".

Though it may provide more satisfaction to just blame MS for all our woes, the truth is that neither you nor I full understand all the restrictions and constraints they're dealing with. Further, having run application development, I'm really really glad I don't have to develop against hardware/software with no recognizable and agreed upon standards. Such as BT.

Bottom line is that the fact that Voice Command doesn't "currently" work via BT is an inconvenience. One perhaps that may cause some to avoid WM5 devices. However, the fact that other facets of WM5 (in particular after AKU2 is released) provides more significant advances that overcome this relatively minor (and hopefully temporary) inconvenience. At least in an Enterprise environment.

Thanks for answering the question about what the heck an AKU2 update is as well. Now I just need to decide on whether I should go for the 650 or the 700w Treo.

In my opinion, if you have not had any experiance with the 650, I would just go for the 700w. It's easy to learn how to use!

If I buy the 700w before the AKU2 version is released, is there some way I can take it back and switch it for that one or download the update?

I've been trying to set up the AUTD until the feature pack is ready, but the setting in the schedule isn't there! Was this removed, so that you don't even have that on the Treo?? All that's in the schedule is various times & manual. No option for syncing on incoming email.

I cannot seem to get Verizon to budge off the $619 price retail
I have two lines on my plan, the NE2 upgrade was used within the last 6 months. I am on a share plan for that is over $99/month.
I am about to just go hunt down a 700w from another source and just do an online ESN change from my existing Samsung SCH-a650..and add in the unlimited data plan to my account.. is there any reason this i SHOULDNT be doing it this way?

    Hi,

The Rep at the retial store I went into gave me 25% off retail due to Merits.
I know this was a mistake. It took the price below the $499 with a contract.
