I've done the USB tethering successfully a number of times - only problem I have is Windows XP wants to re-install the driver every time - so in my connections list I have the CDMA Modem 5 times and counting (CDMA Modem, CDMA Modem #1, #2, etc etc). Is there some sort of identification that changes on the phone? Anyone else have the same behavior, any way around it?
TIA
just wanted to post this for those having trouble with WMODEM and getting the COM8 errors when starting the USB connection (on the phone)..
it's because you are not running the vzw version already on the phone and running the 6600 downloaded version.
No need to do anything short of making vzw factory installed wmodem visible.
no need to attrib the file or anything.
All this can be done with no special tools and on the XV6700 itself with only file explorer.
AFTER running the wmodem and dun enable procedures described earlier in this tread...
on your XV6700
1) open file explorer
2) in file explorer go to menu and select / check "show all files"
3) go to your "windows" directory on your xv6700
4) scroll down (many files) until you see wmodem (it's about 57k)
5) tap and run wmodem from there.
if you dont see wmodem, then make sure you followed the wmodem and dun enable procedures described earlier in this thread.
You will then be able to select "USB" and not get the "com errors" on your pda.... this is because you are runnung the factory installed wmodem already there on your device.
Then after you run wmodem already on your pda.. when you connect to your laptop / computer it will show up as a modem (expermental / no brand in some cases) you can then use the downloaded drivers for the 6600 and model dialer drivers.
You may be prompted for a file called usbser.sys during the install of the dialer driver.. if so, you will need to google search and download this file (alone).. it's also located on our service pack 2 win install disc.
after the dialer driver install on your laptop.. simply go to your network connection control panel and "add new connection".. then go through the new connection wizard selecting the USB modem when prompted... NO NEED to use the wmodem dialer application.. you can just use the standard windows connection... then enter the standard info.. number@vzw vzw pass.. etc..
and you should be able to dial up via the USB cable using wmodem.
again posting this for the people getting the "com errors" right off the bat on the pda itself running the wrong womdem app and are stuck on that part..
Hola. I'm looking into getting a 6700, but want to make sure I can use it as a modem (and of course being there are about 6 pages of instructions and sucess stories, I'm pretty convinced I can )
One thing I'm not clear on is the connectivity from the phone/pda to the laptop. Is the USB cable you all are using included with the phone? What about the BT way of connecting to the laptop? Could anyone let me know a part number or name, or, link, anything on where I could get more info on these things?
Also, I've seen a few people ask about tethernet package charges while online with the laptop, but haven't seen any answers. How has this been working? If you just have the data package this is all possible?
OK, here's another modem question: rather than tethering to a laptop (I do this with my "dumb" phone now, using plain analog (slow) cellular), I can also tether my PDA (iPAQ) to my dumb cellphone. I'm following all these posts about tethering laptop--to--XV6700, and was just wondering if you can use the 6700's PocketPC DUN to connect (with a plain xxx-xxx-xxxx dialup number to my ISP)...............THROUGH the 6700's cellphone (again, using plain ISP dialup)? I know it's much slower than a dedicated data plan, but if (like me) you only need to do this once in a long while, it's simpler and cheaper than going with a Verizon data plan.
So, can the 6700's PocketPC "tunnel" to the 6700's cellphone as a DUN modem? Does this make sense?

the USB cable is included with the phone XV6700 (verizon). It's basically a USB standard to USB mini-standard cable. the Phone charges from the USB port when connected to the notebook, so if battery life is an issue with your portable, then the BT DUN may be what you want.. however the cradle supplied with the 6700 has 2 usb attach points at the rear.. one for the charger and one the data.. if you wanted to charge your phone faster and still be able to use the USB cable for data transfer / dialup.
BT connection to the laptop works great also.. the instructions listed earlier in the thread work well. So far tested with D-link (DBT-120 B4), Belkin (FBT001), and built in bluetooth on a sony SZ-160, 180, built in bluetooth on a toshiba G35 qosmio and a Macbook pro (under windows via bootcamp and under OS X). direct USB cable connection also works great on windows on the macbook pro I might add. however cable usb dial up in OS X is something that I still have not tried.
so I'm assuming that the bluetooth dialup on the 6700 will work in all but a few cases with most laptops with built in bluetooth and most popular adapters...
one thing to remember when using BT dialup is to press and hold the "hang up" button on the phone for a few secs to ensure you've closed any phone data connections or you may see the erroneous IP errors.. just hold down hang up for a few secs and try DUN again.
connection speed is faster via the USB cable than via bluetooth.. but both work well.
on the PDA dial up.. if your PDA has bluetooth, that would probably be the best way to do the dialup.. I have not tried my PDA with it yet..
as for the data charges.. I surf on my 6700 (the device itself) almost as much as via DUN on using my portable and only use my notebook and DUN when I need to on the road.

What about PDA-to-cell dialup DUN..........but on the SAME device? I'm asking about using the XV6700 as a PDA to dialup to an ISP......using the 6700's own cellphone to dial. That needs to be a Bluetooth connection? Is there no hardware/software bridge that allows the 6700's PDA DUN to connect to the 6700's cellphone (modem)? Without any other device attached?
Got a 6700 working with DUN with a Mac running OS X
Here is how I did it:
1. Go to the PHONE application
2. Dial ##3328873 and press SEND
3. Enter code 000000
4. Select BT DUN and Wmodem
5. Click Edit
6. Choose Enable (on bottom)
7. Push Save/OK
8. Follow the prompt to restart your device
Go to your Mac
1. Set up Pairing using the Bluetooth System Preference Panel
2. Set up the 6700 with Bluetooth Setup Assistant
3. Select Dialup and put Tel: #777, your tel#@vzw3g.comm, vzw password.
4. Click Connect
Use device Wi-fi instead of BT dun or usb for tethering?
I got the xv6700 a month and a half ago and I was wondering once you get the wifi and phone antennas' working at the same time. Instead of using the Bt Dun interface or the usb tether is it possible to create a wifi ad-hoc (laptop to device) and the EVdo. So that you can make internet data call and then forward the internet via evdo to the laptop using wifi? Has anybody tried?

I am having problems with the above instructions. First, what is the "Phone Application" ? If I press the green phone button on the front of the 6700, a blue screen comes up with phone buttons. Is that what you all are refering to as the "Phone Application" ?
If I press ##3328873, and press TALK, there is no SEND button, the phone dials - yes, I am pressing # twice.
If I press ##778 and press TALK, a list of things appears, there is no BT DUN option.
I am definitely stumped.
I'll have a 1/2 decaf with an almond mocha biscotti, please!
I am sure someone else has figured this out long before me, but here are the steps I used to get my 6700 to work as a modem, no major 'hacks' required.
if I missed anything, or anything is unclear, pm me.
1. Wmodem
This is a program on Windows Mobile 5.0 that will allow you to use the 6700 as a modem. You can connect via USB, Bluetooth or Infrared, of course speeds will be greatly affected by the last two options.
To find on Pocket PC, Start-->Programs-->File Explorer-->Windows
At the bottom right of screen there is the Menu tab, click and select "Show All Files"
The bottom of the page will be the link for the wmodem program. I copied and pasted it to my Programs folder on pocket PC for easy access.
2. You will need a driver so that Windows will recognize your device as a modem. This driver is cdma1x_usbmdm.inf The corresponding program is CDMA_USBmodem_dialer. This program is what you will launch at the same time you run Wmodem on the Pocket PC. They work together to dial out.
I was able to find this software at http://www.intrasection.com/pjmorr/2005/02/page/2/
The driver and program link are at the bottom of the page.
Install the driver and the program to your Program Folder on your laptop/pc.
I didn't use the Windows Network Wizard to set up the connections, as the CDMA Dialer program seemed to set it up on it's own.
3. It is important to start the Wmodem program on the 6700 before connecting it to the laptop with the USB. When you do plug it in, Windows will ask for a driver. I entered in the folder the driver was in so the laptop recognized the device; and run the CDMA_USBmodem_dialer program.
as for the data charges.. I surf on my 6700 (the device itself) almost as much as via DUN on using my portable and only use my notebook and DUN when I need to on the road.
so far no probs.
Is there anyway for them to tell if you are tethering vs surfing on the 6700, short of 'excessive use'?
Thanks, Aleta. I ended up hard resetting my 6700 and then doing the ##3328873 thing. PDA may not be as fast, but it was pretty straightforward. I might back it up and then do what you suggest.
