I'm going insane. The "Start" button in wmodem.exe is inactive, no matter what I do. How do I make the damn thing active?
update: oops, i was stupid. It's corrected. However, I got disappointed that lower-Brooklyn area in NYC is not covered with EVDO. Only 1xRTT available. (Posting from it right now )
sorry for the newb question. I have a carputer setup that I would like to get internet on, but don't want to spend more than $40/month. I current hae the XV6700, but no data service through Verizon as I only use the WiFi at work. what is the recommended (cheapest) data package I could get to use my XV6700 as a modem in the car for my carputer?
Can anyone tell me what would cause the computer not to be able to set up modem when drivers are provided. I have 2 laptops and both were working with xv6700 as a DUN modem. I updated to new Rom and one of the laptops you can connect with know problems and no changes were made to that machine. The other laptop you can not get the installation wizard to take the driver it is unable to set up modem due to software and hardware conficts. I am at a complete lose with this maybe someone can shed some light on this for me. I am not sure if I need a different drive since I updated the Rom if this was true I would think the other machine would not work. Totaly confused at this point. Any help would be greatly appriciated.
I had DUN working great, then I installed the new firmware.
After installing the new firmware, I tried to enable DUN by dialing ##3328873. Now when I dial that and hit send, it dials the phone number, and does not let me get into the "enable DUN screen".
After scratching my head for a bit, I decieded to try to just launch wmodem and connect like I did before.
It worked.
It seems, for me anyway, that after you install the new firmware, DUN is enabled by default.
I know drrjv, Half Decaf, and narzy ran into this problem, so I figured I would post my experience.

When you enable DUN, you're programming the hardware phone of your device to allow the capability. It's independent of the ROM.
So, to clarify, it's not true that "DUN is enabled by default" as you have said. It's simply still enabled for you.

Thanks ajm! This is great information.
My next question is, what if someone upgraded their rom before enabling DUN? It seems the "##feature" feature doesn't work any more. How would one enable it now?
I have Resco explorer. I highlighted the Wmodem.exe and chose create shortcut and chose programs but Wireless Modem doesn't show up in my programs folder. I was able to create a shortcut file for it in the Windows folder but when I try copying it to programs (where I see my programs .lnk files) I get an error message.
Can someone recommend a good (and tiny) third party launcher to launch stuff like wmodem.exe?
After much frustration, I gave up for the night, trying to connect one of my machines. The next night, I tried on another machine. I was extremely excited when I got it working via USB, the via BT! Now that I got it working, I knew what I needed to do on the other machine...so I thought!
I did everything the same as done on working machine, however, I continue to receive the following error:
When I go to properties and view the Services tab, I see the DUN profile. I check the box next to Dial-up networking (DUN) to enable it, but as soon as I click 'OK' or 'Apply', it pops up with a window that says:

It worked for me. I just recently got a refurb, updated the ROM, enabled DUN.
I hear that these feature codes don't exist if you abort Verizon's provisioning of their custom software. If that's the case, backup your device (I use Sunnysoft Backup Manager), hard-reset and enable DUN, then hard-reset and abort vzw provisoning before a full restore.
I hard-reset and restore my device every few weeks without any problems. It only takes 15 minutes, and it always runs better afterwards.
Ok. My friend just got a brand new XV6700 from verizon. We brought it home, did a hard-reset and aborted before the vzw stuff installed.
We then launched wmodem, hooked it up to his laptop, and it worked like a charm. I guess this one had DUN activated out of the box.

Can any Mac users post a success or lack thereof for getting the 6700 used for DUN via USB tether?
I see someone managed to get it to work via BT, but of course the issue there is watching your battery drain like crazy; I've used my Razr for hours at a time with a charging USB cable from gomadic and it's been very handy.
I know, I could just use Boot Camp and boot the Mac into Windoz, but I'd rather not if I don't have to.
Thanks to everyone on this thread for all their investiation; I actually aborted my plan to buy a 6700 today when the sales drone told me that EVDO tethering was only supported on the 700p and one of the Crackberry models. Good to know there's hope, I'll probably return to the VZW store and pick up this guy on Worry-free and see if I can make the DUN instructions work for me!
Finally, got BT DUN to work with the new ROM's and Mac OS X!!!
Here's how:
1. Hard Reset and allow VZW software to load.
2. Dial ##3328873 and enable BT and Wmodem
3. Do the Hard->Soft Reset Hack
4. Pair BT with your 6700 and Mac
5. Enter the settings (yournumber@vzw3g.com, vzw, #777)
6. Select the au cdmaOne Bluetooth Adapter as your BT modem
7. Start surfing on your Mac
PS: No need to run Wmodem
Thanks to ajm for the hint!
PSS: This note sent from my OS X Mac with BT DUN on my 6700
Thanks to the posters for all the adive on this very informative thread. I have my XV6700 up and running on USB.
My question is about the speed. I am showing a connection speed of only 230.3 Kbps. I was expecting at least 300 and closer to 600 on average. Am I not optimising the settings? I am in an EVDO area.
