Why am I noticing really inconsistent speeds for data download on 3G? Is it the network? I'm in the Detroit area with full 3G coverage based on Cingular's maps. Or is it the 8525? Which i'm thinking doesn't have the greatest signal reception in the world. :-/
And i'm talking while in the same spot not moving around. Is the times of day when there is an overload of bandwidth? It's way slower now (about 7pm) than say later at night (around 11pm).
thnx
> Clearnet PCS: Nokia 6188 (1999)
-> Bell : Nokia 6185 -> Motorola ST7867W (99-01)
--> AT&T: Nokia 6360 -> Nokia 6200 - (01-04)
---> Verizon: LG VX6000 -> Motorola E815 - (04-07)
3G hasnt launched here yet, but I've been to Atlanta and Charlotte recently. When doing speed tests from my 8525, and downloading normal files, I've noticed that after 700K or so of downloading at close to 80K/s I get throttled to 25K/30Kps. Is this normal?
OK. I have a Moto V3xx in Tulsa, Oklahoma with 3g. My phone screen says 2.5g. What in the world does that mean?
2.5g would mean your using the edge netwok.

I've noticed the same thing here in CT. File size doesn't seem to matter either. It almost always slows towards the end of the download. I get great results maybe 1 out of every 8 tests. I'm hoping that its just an initial kink they are working out.

Atlanta GA ( 1/2 mile from Cingular Corporate HQ) I do have 4 bars and 3G never ever got more than 500 kbit/sec from www.dslreports.com/mspeed test of 600k.
600k test
389 kbit/sec
0.443s latency
1 MB
272 kbit/sec
.439s latency
30.532sec d/l time
I thought HSDPA was to be faster than EVDO. Check these comparisons. Sprint is blowing away Cingular (and also beating Verizon). I thought HSDPA should get over 2Mbps but I have yet to see anyone who has yet.

I bet what's dragging Cingular down is that 3G/HSDPA isn't widespread enough, and most of those results are EDGE based. Not a fair comparison for speed of Cingular's 3G if it includes EDGE results. However it is an indication of Cingular's rollout (limited, poor, whatever you want to say about it) of 3G/UMTS/HSDPA....
I get 1100+ kbps on my 8525 which is decent and I'm happy with that (and can do both voice and data at the same time - EVDO can't). The 8525 is only HSDPA 1.8 (theoretical 1.8Mbps max, probably 1Mbps realistically). There are other newer phones with HSDPA 3.6 - theortical 3.6Mbps max (probably 2Mbps realistically). Those will probably bump up the average for Cingular once they get more widespread.
Yeah, I agree that EDGE can bring down the average, but the max is pitiful compared to EVDO. Max I've seen is 1.4Mbps for HSDPA. Max for EVDO is 2.4-2.5Mbps in real world.
Also look at the high percent of Sprint users that get over 1Mbps. Quite a few.
