Hi!
I just got my e398 today, and I'm having a bit of a problem with my TF card.
For one, the phone doesn't detect it's in.
I've gotten it to detect it a few times, but for the most part it's not.
Second, when it IS detected, the phone can't read from it. I tried to format it but it kept saying "format failed" over and over.
I don't know what's wrong, I'm so frustrated!
Any help at all is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Ditto I've got a e398 and can't get a 1gb transflash to work on it.
The transflash card is not meant to be removed constantly from a phone . It is not 100% stable media . And even if you read the packaging it tells you not to handle it often as they mess up often. They are easily affected by moisture , static electricity, dirt and other types of handling. First try cleaning it with a clean linen cloth with alcohol but allow the alcohol to almost dry before cleaning chip. Next instal it in a transflash adapter and insert in computer card reader. Format it there . If it doesnt work then you have killed it . Hopefully your warranty is still good and you can get another 1.Originally Posted by zephster

use i.e. for this link works easier.
Cleaned my card. The transflash works on my computer. So the problem
is either hardware or software.
Motorola's response is
"Dear Sir/Mdm
Thank you for your email dated 25 April 2006.
The Motorola E398 is only able to support up to 256 MB transflash memory card. It does not support 1 GB transflash memory card.
The Motorola Phone Tools software works best with Windows 2000 and Windows XP (Service Pack 2) operating system. It does not work with Windows 98 operating system."
Please accept our apologies for not being able to provide a more suitable alternative."
65 dollars down the drain.
WOW .. Didnt even notice you said it was a 1gb transflash .. Would've told you phone dont see it .. The new V3i only see 512mb transflash ... I wrote that in a thread either yesterday or the day before.Originally Posted by starburst33a

Get a phone from a different company. I've tried reflashing my e398 with 8 different
monster packs. I can't even get the e398 to ROKR conversion to work, I just get a flashing or blinking white screen. Motorola has a high numbers of just crap e398.
That on top of it my e398 won't accept 1 gb SD Micro transflash, it's official design won't
accept the 512 SD Micro gb transflash. The e398 has just been one huge waste of money for me.
I've tried reflashing my e398 with 5 different MP's ( BG42R, BlueZre, FreedomNS, BG48R V2, and BG48R V3 ) all work well with my 512 TF, with exception Artwork for my iTunes. Currently I have almost 200 mp3's (64KB bit rate) on my TF ( 100 for iTunes with Artwork, and the rest plays with MP3 ROKR player). I wonder if anyone experienced problem with TF.

I bought mine off ebay without a card. I bought a 512 not realizing the phone didn't accept one that big. The phone kept saying format failed but it recognized it. I bought a 256 and the phone doesn't see it at all. HELP!! I bought the phone for the music capabilities (plus it's a great speaker phone and bluetooth). Any suggestions or how the whole flash thing works. I've always just bought a phone and used it.
The E398 WORKS! with 512mb and 1Gb transflash/microsd cards i used a 512mB for a long time, and today i bought a 1Gb microsd and straight out the box it worked in my E398...
If you format the card format it using FAT16 !!! or else the e398 (and many other devices) will not reconize it...

I just noticed on the last post phones listed included e398 and v398. I didn't really give it much thought until I saw that but when my phone comes on it says v398? is that something different or could that be part of my problem? Also does it have to be formatted before putting it in the phone? I tried to format it from my pc and "fat32" and "fat" where the only choices. This is probably a dumb question but is "fat" and "fat16" the same thing?
I just got a reply from the person that sold me the e398 off ebay. He said he didn't include the card he had because he is using it with his new phone but it worked perfectly in the phone before. Any suggestions? I really like the phone but if I can't load music I'll have to get another one.

I disagree. The 1 gb DOES NOT WORK EVER, on my singapore made phones. I've reflashed my phone to and half a dozen other monsterpacks like revolution 3.0, formated not just one but two 1 gb transflash microsd at fat16, the phone still will not recognize or see either. It sees my junk 64k just fine. Wiped the connectors with alcohol, resest the phone twice.
The Motorola E398 is a piece of crap, I suggest getting another phone. Too small
an earphone jack, no windows 98se support, always having buttons, plays mp3 only
one at a time without itunes. Pushed when it's in my pocket, crappy photo good only at 2 feet, no equalizer on the phone. If you just want a phone around the house, this is fine, however as a "swiss army" knife for all your daily web surfing, messaging
and other needs, get something else.
The official line from Motorola is the phone was only made for 256.
I really like my E398. Its got Rev 3.0 on it with a 512mb card. The only reason I would see that you push buttons while its in your pocket is because you didn't lock the keypad. I've never had a problem with this phone. The camera quality isn't 1.3 megapixels but it does the job when you need it. Camera isn't a big need for me. But back to the topic.
The 512mb card will work without a mod. Just pop it in, click format in the settings menu and your set. I haven't tried the 1gb but I heard that on some 398's you need to mod something for it to work.

So what if it doesn't recognize the card at all...256 OR 512...and if it does (occationally it will see the 512) it doesn't let me format it nor if i format in on my pc (fat) I cant access the files...could it be a bad card slot on the phone? Should I reflash with something? HELP or I'm tossing it and getting another phone!
