Why are you looking to reinvent the wheel? Is your 'data plan' that much cheaper than an actual BB add-on data plan? Are you fed up with BBs monopoly with email solutions for their own phones? I'd suggest checking BB App World but then you wouldn't have access from your phone without a BB data plan...
Apologies...left out a few other details....I travel to the U.S. for a few weeks over the year for now with th goal of ultimately staying for up to 6 months...unlocked my Torch, bought an AT&T Pay as you Go plan with the goal of converting it to to a full account once I stay in the U.S. for my 6 month stays but for now it's pay as you go. Added a 100 MB for $20/month data plan to my pay as you go account...I plan on cancelling the add on data and re-adding it as required while I'm going to the U.S. for just weeks at a time but ultimatley I will have a full U.S. carrier contract when I extend my stays to a full 6 months. For now, with pay as yuo go, I get Voice for $0.10/min. text msgs for $0.20 send/receive and as mentioned 100 MBs of data for $20...using my Torch Voice, texting and looking for a non-BB email solution....yes, I don't get BBM but I can get everything else for way cheaper than adding on any Rogers U.S. travel packages.....was hoping there was some sort of 3rd party email client that I could use on my Torch
My bold 9700 runs on t-mobile for $5 preferred web2go, before corporate discount. I get family text on all five lines for 9.99 total before discount. It is alot cheaper than even the preferred $20 blackberry plan that I use to have. I downloaded a program called logic mail which says you can use IMAP and POP accounts, but I haven't spent time to set it up. Maybe someone else has experience with this program on t-mobile.

Hi Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I just wanted to know does the tmobile curve 3g and the tmobile bold 9780 works on $5 preferred webtogo plan without the push email and bbm? The wiki only states blackberry 9100 and 9700. Thank you.
My experience is simply that you can't have a Blackberry without the data plan. I didn't set one up when I activated my BB and soon enough they let me know that a plan was required and would be added to my bill. This was on AT&T, I don't know about other carriers, but they are probably similar.
I have tried to read through most of the posts in this thread....forgive me if this has been addressed BUT can someone tell me some good reasons for having WIFI on a Blackberry? I say this because I just picked up a 9650, I had a 9630 Boostberry for about 2yrs, was pretty happy with everything EXCEPT coverage was spotty. I knew PP used Verizons network, heard I could put a Verizon BB on PP, thought to myself "hey, since PP has a limit on data, I will just get a cool 9650 with WIFI and use mostly @ home (which is usually the case) OR out and about WIFI hotspots...if I need to use 3G -so be it, no prb.." WELL apparently I did not do very good research....since u basically cannot use the WIFI with the mobile data turned off (or someone PLEASE enlighten me if u can). So don't get me wrong here, I am still pretty happy knowing I have pretty good coverage (cell strength in my house is off the charts). I am certainly more worried about making/taking a customers call even if out in the boonies. I just figured I would be able to use the WIFI no prb apart from mobile data.
So I will ask again, simply WHY is WIFI on a BB? With Boost I was unlimited everything, my 9630 didn't even have WIFI of course....BUT web was painfully slow and coverage was lacking. I traded one for the other and again, pretty happy with the switch....STILL would like the know what the advantage of having wifi is
You can use the Wifi on a BB with the data turned off. I do this all the time, especially when outside of the country. Was just on a cruise a few weeks ago, turned the data off, and used Wifi when we were in port. Worked great for Facebook, email, Twitter, browsing, etc.
Now, without a proper BB data plan, some of those features may or may not work, such as Facebook and Twitter. I am almost positive that those apps, along with others, require a BIS plan be active on the phone.

Well looks like u are right. No BIS here and no go for me. Just have to see how my data usage goes. I am ok I think but for the occasional times I like streaming Pandora or iheartradio, I think it will jack up the data big time? How much data do streaming really use? Any tables out there that estimate how much say a basic hr of streaming is mb wise?
Are you not able to get the proper BlackBerry data plan for the device? Once you do that, you can use either that or WiFi to stream your music. I would suggest WiFi if you are on some sort of a limited MB data plan like most of us are.
I should add: I came from Boost (9630) -loved the phone but hated Sprints coverage....heard I could put a Verizon BB on PP, did that but used a 9650 because I THOUGHT I could use the WIFI on it too.....bummer but I LOVE the phone (non-trackball) AND best of all Verizons coverage and 3G is off the hook....overall I am super happy......just trying to get anything else I can
i have t-moblie they told me i had to have bb data plan with a blackberry phone , so i bought a phone bb 8520 off craiglist and put my sim card in and i'm good to go, even web works, i could not be happer
