Motorola P280 Users - what do you think?

I am thinking about getting a Motorola 280. What do you think about it? Love it or hate it?

    Thanks -

You can read my complete review of the P280 at http://www.arcx.com/sites/Motorola280.htm. I personally love the phone, and I believe it is probably the BEST GSM phone you can presently buy (in terms of audio quality and RF performance combined).

As someone else already noted, the period I put at the end of the sentence was included in the URL. I've edited the message so that the period appears OUTSIDE of the URL. It works fine now.

The P280 is an outstanding phone. I live in a fringe area for VSTRM signal and the P280 gets the best RF for both voice and GPRS. I have also used an R520, 8890 and a T68. The P280 has the best RF of all of them.

Really? You'd rate it better than all those expensive GSM phones as well? Like the 8890, T39, T68, V66?

I know the RF is supposed to be really good (that's why I got it), but I didn't know it would be rated THAT good.

I use the p280 mostly in an area with a lot of hills and lakes. A lot of phones don't even get a signal where I live but the p280 usually can get a connection. Even when the signal is pretty weak (1 - 2 bars), conversations still sound normal. Sound sometimes cuts out but it never sounds scrambled.

I often use the phone in Windsor, ON (near the US border). Even though the phone defaults to Microcell there, you can still change it to use VS on the phone (so you you don't get charged for roaming). This is my first GSM phone so I am not sure if all GSM phones can do that..?

GPRS works great on the VS network, it doesn't work when roaming in N Michigan on NPI's network. So it seems not all GSM networks in the US are equipped for this.

Battery life is great, it usually lasts about 3-5 days (I use it about 20 - 30 minutes a day). At least much better than my Nextel i1000 which needed refueling every 24hrs...

All in all, I am very happy with the phone so far. For me, RF performance is the most important part in a cell phone and this is the best one I had so far.

I completely agree. I have the Ericsson T68 and Mot T60g and so far (after 2 days worth of use) the P280 has the best reception. Much, Much better than the T68 but only marginally better than the V60g.
BUT, still not as good as my wifes Nokia 6190! I think the 6190 must have the best RF performance of ANY phone I have ever used. Period!

I've had my P280 for just over a week. The sound quality and reception are excellent. I was able to place a call with 2 bars of signal in an area where my friend couldn't even get a signal. My friend is also on Rogers using the P7382i.

Actually, I think it all depends on the country you live in (i.e. the service providers). I mean all the most expensive phones like the T68, T39 etc etc are rated very highly and the P280 is rated only average on European websites like...

    www.gsmarena.dk

I think the phones that were MEANT to be used in Europe are wicked with the Euro-providers and not so great here. They're great looking phones with wicked features, but when you bring them to North America, they don't work up to their potential. So I think people might be wasting money buying foreign phones. 'Cause from the reviews that I've seen for Euro phones here in North America...they're nothing special, when in fact, the phones ARE very special phones...just not on our stupid providers.

You can only use it in windsor because Voicestreams towers can still capture signals strongly all the way to the end of windsor....
Not all gsm phones let u select ur home network....although the newer motorola ones do..

i live in windsor....stupid detroit towers capture everything!! except for our CDMA providers.....but who wants a cdma phone?
